Pedro Mascarenhas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pedro Mascarenhas (1470- June 23, 1555) was a Portuguese explorer and colonial administrator.
In 1528 explorer Diogo Rodrigues (after whom the island of Rodrigues is named) named the islands of Réunion, Mauritius, and Rodrigues the Mascarene Islands, after Mascarenhas.
Mascarenhas served as Captain-Major of the Portuguese colony of Malacca from 1525 to 1526, and as viceroy of Goa, capital of the Portuguese possessions in Asia, from 1554 until his death in 1555.

As Mascarenhas became aware of the storm that was gathering against him, he prepared to meet it as well as possible, and sent notice of his danger to the governor-general, Don Juan de Castro, and to all the neighbouring Portuguese commanders.
Mascarenhas having expressed a desire of acquiring some intelligence from the enemy's camp, one Diego de Anaya Coutinno, a gentleman of note and of great strength, put on a helmet with a sword by his side and a spear in his hand, and let himself down from the wall under night.
Mascarenhas on his part exerted every means for defence, always repairing to wherever there was most danger, as desirous of gaining equal honour with Silveyra who had so gallantly defended the same place only a few years before.

Meanwhile John III., king of Portugal, had re-solved on sending a mission to his Indian dominions, and had applied through his envoy Pedro Mascarenhas to the pope for six Jesuits.
Bobadilla, sent for to Rome, arrived there just before Mascarenhas was about to depart, but fell too ill to respond to the call made on him.
Xavier complied, merely waiting long enough to obtain the pope's benediction, and set out for Lisbon, where he was presented to the king, and soon won his entire confidence, attested notably by procuring for him from the pope four briefs, one of them appointing him papal nuncio in the Indies.

The island currently known as Diego Garcia was probably discovered in 1512 by a famous Portuguese captain named Pedro Mascarenhas.
Early in that year he was sailing in an 'armada' (fleet) under the aegis of one Dom Garcia de Noronhas, who would later go on to be the Third Viceroy of India (1538-1542).
So, Pedro Mascarenhas had his ship detached to hurry to India, finding out if there was a faster route than simply following the African coastline northwards.
