Founded in 1533 by Don Pedro de Heredia, and named after the port of Cartagena in Spain's Murcia region, it was a major center of early Spanish settlement in the Americas, and continues to be an economic hub as well as a popular tourist destination.
Cartagena was founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, in the area where the Caribbean Calamarí people lived, their name meaning 'crab'.
The first slaves arrived with Pedro de Heredia and they worked as cane cutters to open roads, in the desecration of tombs of the aboriginal population of Sinu, and in the construction of buildings and fortresses.

Heredia attacked their stockades, which were fortified with palisades of wooden stakes on which the Indians often displayed the impaled decapitated heads of their enemies.
According to an early account written by Juan de Castellanos, Catalina was a young girl, and daughter of a cacique, or native chief, when she was taken prisoner by Spanish Captain Diego de Nicuesa, in Galerazamba, not far from Cartagena.
Heredia took her aboard in Santa Marta with the knowledge that she was fluent in both Spanish and the native tongue, when he came to found the city of Cartagena, and conquer and plunder the tribes living nearby.

He continued to serve under the different governors of Venezuela, and in 1566 was intrusted by Pedro Ponce de Leon with the conquest of the country of the Caracas Indians, which had been partially settled by Fajardo in 1560, but afterward abandoned.
The latter, after a protracted war, defeated the allies, and was appointed by Ponce de Leon governor of the newly founded colony.
Losada applied to Ponce de Leon for help; but, in order to restore peace, the latter divested him of his command in 1569, transferring the seat of the general government to Caracas.

CACERES, Alonso de (cah'-the-res), Spanish soldier, born in Palos, Huelva, in 1499; died in Arequi-pa, Peru, in 1554.
He went to Santo Domingo in 1519, and took part in several expeditions, conquered, with Pedro de Heredia, the province of Cartagena, and was alcalde of its capital in 1534.
He accompanied Vaca de Castro at the battle of Chupas, and sided with the royalists during the revolts promoted by Gonzalo Pizarro, who, on his entering Lima after his victories, directed the imprisonment of Caceres.
