At the junction of the Pee Dee and Lynches River is a large island, Snows Island (subsequently identified as the center of an old meteor crater), that was headquarters for General Francis Marion during the American Revolution.

The Altamaha River basin drains nearly one quarter of the state of Georgia, with its 14,000-square-mile watershed reaching from the upper Piedmont to the lower Coastal Plain and encompassing the cities of Athens, Macon, Milledgeville, and parts of Atlanta.
This estuary, where the freshwater from the river mixes with saltwater from the Atlantic, occupies an area of roughly twenty-six square miles in Glynn and McIntosh counties in southeastern Georgia and is arguably the largest intact, relatively undegraded estuary system on the Atlantic coast.
A variety of reptiles and amphibians are native to the bottomland and swamp forests that line the river and to the river itself.

Fourteen miles of the Little Pee Dee River from Highway 378 to the confluence with the Great Pee Dee River were designated as a State Scenic River in March of 1990 by the Legislature.
The proposed Scenic River addition includes the 64-mile river corridor that begins at the North Carolina border on the Lumber River and extends south to the U.S. Highway 378 bridge on the Little Pee Dee River.
From the Little Pee Dee these landings can be reached by entering either the upper end of Russ Creek or Jiles Creek and related sloughs on the west side of the river.

The population in the Pee Dee River system occurs in a relatively short reach of the Lynches River in Chesterfield, Lancaster, and Kershaw Counties and extends into Flat Creek, a tributary to the Lynches River in Lancaster County (Keferl 1991).
In the Savannah River system, one population is found in Turkey Creek and two of its tributaries, Mountain Creek and Beaverdam Creek, in Edgefield County, South Carolina; and, another smaller population still survives in Cuffytown Creek, in Greenwood County, South Carolina (Alderman 1998).
Presently, the species is known to occur in only six small streams and one small river and is usually found in mud, muddy sand, or muddy gravel substrates along stable, well-shaded stream banks (Keferl and Shelly 1988, Keferl 1991).
