Pee Wee King, musician, 86   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
King, 86, who was born Frank Kuczynski in Milwaukee, suffered a serious heart attack late last month and died with his wife and family at his bedside, a spokeswoman for Jewish Hospital said.
King began his career playing accordion with local polka bands in Milwaukee and then moved into country music, in part because he and cowboy actor and singer Gene Autry got to know each other when both performed on the same Chicago radio station.
King's group also became the first full-time band for the Grand Ole Opry in 1937 at a time when Opry performers were part-time and often held other jobs to make ends meet.

March 8, 2000 - Pee Wee King Dies Feature
It was Autry who dubbed his new bandleader "Pee Wee," in deference to the fact that, at 5 feet six inches, he was the smallest member of the band and also to distinguish him from other "Franks" in the band.
Though Pee Wee would later be invited to appear in a number of Autry pictures, he decided to stay in radio for the time being.
Pee Wee was very much enthralled with some of the new swing bands on the air -- especially Bob Wills, Louise Massey and the Westerners and Clayton McMichen's Georgia Wildcats -- and he began to incorporate their new sounds into his music.

E! Online News - Country's Pee Wee King Dies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Pee Wee King, the diminutive country music hall of famer who scored a giant hit with his "Tennessee Waltz" and revolutionized the Grande Ole Opry, died today of complications from a heart attack.
King joined Nashville's Grand Ole Opry in 1937, bringing such novelties as electric instruments (the Opry's first electric steel guitar), horns and his trademark accordion to the venue.
King also scored hits with recordings of "Slow Poke" (his biggest seller), "Silver and Gold" and "You Belong to Me." He and his band also had cameos in several Westerns, including a couple Gene Autry films.

Splendid E-zine reviews: Pee Wee King
Pee Wee King (alias Frankie King, alias Frank Kuczynski) started off as a pretty straightforward Polish-American bandleader, but a stint backing Gene Autry awakened him to the possibilities (and the magic) of country-western or "hillbilly" music.
King's take on the music was pristine cowboy crooning -- innocent western swing-derived tunes with a healthy dose of twang and a refreshing Hollywood-musical friendliness.
Whether due to preference or style, King never really embraced the drinkin', lechin' and lyin' themes that were seeping into "mainstream" country-western music circa 1950 -- this isn't "cry in your beer" music, it's "chuckle-in-your-punch" music.

As a result of the band's unique style of western swing and the success of a number of their recordings, the Golden West Cowboys were honored by Cash Box magazine's award for "Nation's Number One Western Band" two years in succession.
Pee Wee moved the band to Louisville, Kentucky about two years after Roy joined the band, where they did a weekly television show and a daily radio show on WAVE.
