Russel's recording debut was in 1924 with Herb Berger's Band in St. Louis, then moved to Chicago where he began playing with such notables as Frankie Trumbauer and Bix Beiderbecke.
Russell's unique, and sometimes derided approach was praised as ahead of its time, and cited by some as an early example of free jazz.
Russell died in a hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.

Thelonious Monk & Pee Wee Russell
Mary [Russell's wife] and Pee Wee arrived at the festival a week early as house guests of George Wein, who had suggested the idea to both musicians.
Russell, who had picked the tunes he wanted to play at Newport while listening to Monk at New York's Five Spot but had not been able to rehearse them with the group, found beautiful passages in "Nutty," but was over-shadowed by a great, intense Rouse solo.
When one of the tracks from the concert was played for Pee Wee during a blindfold test in 1964, his reaction showed that he had second thoughts about the whole modern experiment.

Pee Wee Russell was one of them, but his musicianship was turned to a creative impulse, which departed radically from the schooled polish that set the standard for the instrument, particularly after the Benny Goodman small group recordings were made.
It features two Pee Wee choruses in which he pulls a "down shift" from the upper to lower register in an anti- dramatic contradiction to the usual tension building dynamics of soloing at that time - 1938.
Their empathy for Pee Wee's poetic nature is absolute perfection, and if I had to pick one series of recordings as Pee Wee's best, this would be it.
