German WW2 Rocket Site Presents A Moral Maze
Peenemuende was built to bear witness to the ideology of National Socialism.
Peenemuende was built to carry out Hitler's dream of building a rocket powerful enough to bomb targets in Britain, Holland and Belgium, without endangering aircraft and crew.
Peenemuende was a hive of activity in its heyday, before a major RAF bombing raid in 1943, the biggest British mission of the war, destroyed large sections of the facility.

 This New Ocean - Ch1-3
The story of German achievements in military rocketry during the late thirties and early forties at Peenemuende, the vast military research installation on the Baltic Sea, is well known.
Called "Assembly-4" (A-4) by the Peenemuende group, the rocket had a range of nearly 200 miles and a maximum velocity of about 3,500 miles per hour, and was controlled by its [17] gyroscope and exhaust deflector vanes, sometimes supplemented by radio control.
Peenemuende was within the Russian zone of occupation, but before the arrival of the Soviet forces von Braun and most of the other engineers and technicians fled westward with a portion of their technical data.

But as an exhibition in Peenemuende on the north German island of usedom now reveals, scientists and engineers were already at work on the so-called Nazi wonder weapons - dubbed "doodle-bugs" by the British - from 1938 onwards, well before the start of World War II.
Peenemuende’s development is placed in a realistic political and economic context, backed by witness accounts, some from scientists, concentration camp guards and prisoners made to work there.
In October 1992, celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the first Peenemuende rocket launch were cancelled at the last minute after a howl of international disapproval.

Use of the system on the A4 was complicated by the problem of the electrical charge that formed on the rocket body during flight through the atmosphere, and the electrical ions in the rocket exhaust, both of which made good reception of radio signals difficult.
The early failure rate of the A4 prototype missiles was extremely high, so the Peenemuende rocket team had to develop new measures to test and improve reliability down to the component level.
By this time, the Peenemuende staff was allocated as follows: 135 were working on Taifun anti-aircraft barrage rocket; 1940 were working on the V-2; 1220 were working on the Wasserfall surface-to-air missile; 270 were working on the A4b winged V-2; and 660 were in administrative positions.

Werner Dahm, 87, a former aerodynamics engineer at Peenemuende, witnessed the launch from a boat on the Baltic Sea.
The raid missed many key facilities, but it prompted the SS to order that the production side of the A-4 programme be moved to an underground facility in central Germany that became known as Mittelwerk.
US Army intelligence officers soon found many Peenemuenders in and around Oberammergau, in the Bavarian Alps, where they had been evacuated.

photos and information about the village of Peenemuende
Two important events at Peenemuende, which was first mentioned in a document of 1282, have gone down in world history: Only some historians know that in 1630 troops of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf went ashore at Peenemuende intervening successfully in the Thirty Years´ War on the part of the Protestant League.
After World War 2 Peenemuende continued to be a military base until the early nineties.
It is rather an ugly one-horse village, but myths and legends about the rocket research centre, remains of military architecture, and, last but not least, a lot of museums, among them the Historical Technical Information Centre and the Submarine Museum, make the village one of the most interesting places on the island of Usedom.

As a catalogue record of the exhibitions at Peenemuende, the book is extremely well-illustrated and the authors adopt a clever device, including the captions photographs and documents in the exhibition, which for reasons of space cannot be included in the printed catalogue.
The rockets of Peenemuende were conceived as weapons of war and Hoppe and Erichson cover the processes of weapons development, deployment and use fairly comprehensively, with a series of essays by other contributors.
Erichson and Hoppe's account of the events at Peenemuende and their consequences would provide a pretty good starting point for anyone interested in the ethics of scientific and techological endeavours and the loyalties of the leading figures should make anyone doubt the claims made for pure science and research.

Another way was persuading former engineers from Peenemuende - the experimental centre where the V-2s were built - to come on board their nascent rocket programmes.
In America, the Peenemuenders would eventually develop the rockets that carried astronauts Alan Shepard and John Glenn into space and the Apollo capsules to the Moon.

The Allied bombing of Peenemuende of August 17, 1943 was disruptive and resulted in the loss of a few months of development and production work due to dispersion and reorganization.

This impressively researched narrative provides a significant addition to the extensive literature on the Peenemuende rocket development center and the A-4 (or V-2) rocket developed there.
Neufeld argues convincingly that under the leadership of Dornberger and Wernher von Braun, the Peenemuende organization achieved a working rocket by developing three key technologies: large liquid-propellant engines, supersonic aerodynamics, and guidance and control.
Second, while the technology developed at Peenemuende contributed significantly to later rockets and missiles, it is an exaggeration to call the A-4
