 JAG - The Peerage
The peerage of Charlemagne was the first and, for its influence throughout the politics of mediaeval Europe, the most famous.
Scotland may be said to have a peerage of similar antiquity, for that body known as the "Seven Earls" was as powerful as the continental peerages, pre-dated all but that of Charlemagne, and its descendants retained great influence until comparatively modern times.
In contrast, new appointments to the Peerage of Ireland did not end similarly in 1801, when Ireland joined Great Britain in the United Kingdom and the Peerage of the United Kingdom was created, for it was agreed that the number of Irish peers could be maintained at 100 by new creations.

Peerage in the UK I’ve always thought that the whole peerage concept in the UK was somewhat odd and very out dated and the arrest of Mark Thatcher brought it into the light and further confirmed my skeptism of the concept.
Mark Thatcher is actually Sir Mark and is referred to as Sir Mark in all the UK press whilst locally we seem to have ignored the title.

Since its first publication in 1826, Burke's Peerage and Baronetage has been rightly regarded as the authoritative reference book on the British aristocracy and, consequently, has become an institution in its own right.
In addition, valuable new information is included: preliminary essays on the histories of major families and titles; articles on the principal houses and family seats; a thorough revision of all coats of arms (which have been computer enhanced for greater clarity); and details on the correct forms of address for all living individuals.
The 106th Edition of Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, with more than 3,400 pages in two volumes, is the most comprehensive study ever produced of the British aristocracy and its ancestry; it now confirms its position as the indispensable source of reference on the subject.
