Pegasus Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy(Peg dSph, DDO 216)
A dwarf spheroidal galaxy, discovered in 1998 in the constellation Pegasus, that is a small, newly-recognized member of the Local Group.
Also known as Andromeda VI, because it is probably a satellite companion of the Andromeda Galaxy and the sixth such to be found, the Pegasus Dwarf is almost hidden in the glare of relatively bright foreground stars in our own Milky Way.
The Pegasus Dwarf Spheroidal was discovered in 1999 by various researchers on the Second Palomar Sky Survey.

UCSC astronomers describe dwarf galaxies; 01-11-99
Eva Grebel, a Hubble postdoctoral fellow, and Raja Guhathakurta, an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics, confirmed earlier suspicions that the newly discovered galaxies are companions of the Andromeda spiral galaxy.
The Pegasus dwarf galaxy (center) is a companion of the Andromeda spiral galaxy, approximately 2.5 million light-years from the sun.
Dwarf galaxies are thought to serve as building blocks from which larger galaxies are assembled.

Fuku Pegasus' uniform consists of a long, sleeve-less shirt and loose white pants; the shirt is pale blue with a yellow pegasus detailed over the left breast, and belted a cloth-of-silver sash.
Explanation Pegasus, in Greek mythology, was the winged horse that sprang from Medusa's blood after the saw slain by Perseus.
The Pegasus dwarf spheroidal (Peg dSpH) is part of the local group of galaxies, likely a satellite companion of the Andromeda (M31) galaxy.

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Astronomers get a chance to size up a brown dwarf
Brown dwarfs -- failed stars that fall somewhere between the smallest stars and the largest planets on the spectrum of heavenly objects -- have always been viewed by astronomers as a critical link in the understanding of how both stars and planets form.
The trouble with brown dwarfs, however, is that they are hard to find and, so far, they have defied nearly all attempts to accurately assess their size.
The discovery of the paired brown dwarfs and critical measurements of the unsuccessful stars are reported in the March 16 issue of Nature, a leading scientific journal, by a team of astronomers from Vanderbilt University, UW-Madison and the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Although she was declared destroyed, three days earlier, an operative in Romulan High Command reported the discovery of debris from the Pegasus in the Devolin system, and a warbird is currently searching for the rest of the ship.
When Picard returns the inquiry, Sirol answers that the warbird is investigating gaseous anomalies in the area--a mission Picard notes that they are also engaged in, and suggests that they pool their resources towards a common goal, After Sirol declines, and the warbird moves off, Picard orders the search underway.
He informs him that a full inquiry into the Pegasus incident will take place once the ship reaches Starbase 247; Riker will have some hard questions to answer, and is likely to lose a lot of the respect he has earned since his days aboard the Pegasus.

 S&TR | March 2003
So the number of dwarf galaxies we observe today are probably the remnants of a much larger initial population, most of which went to form our own galaxy.
Because dwarf spheroidal galaxies are the smallest type of dwarf galaxy, one might expect them to be simple laboratories for studying star formation.
The result, in the presence of a massive galaxy, is to limit the ability of the dwarf system to form multiple generations of stars or, in extreme cases, to form any stars at all.

 GK Workshop - J.S. Gallagher
Morphological distinctions between dwarf and giant galaxies are largely associated with the low central densities of luminous matter in dwarfs, and we investigate the astrophysics of this signature of dwarfs.
As dwarfs come in two distinct structural forms, rotating disks in irregulars and dynamically hot spheroids in the dSph/dE family, it is not clear that dwarfs are produced by a single process.
Dwarf galaxies are often easily distinguished from giants on the basis of their optical appearances, a regularity that indicates dwarfs must systematically differ from giants.

If red dwarfs are campfire embers, the most luminous stars are giant nuclear fireballs by comparison.

M31 Dwarf Spheroidal Variable Star Surveys
It is believed that dwarf galaxies contribute to building the outer halos of their parent galaxy.
Various variable star surveys of the Galactic dwarf spheroidals have shown that the RR Lyrae populations, while similar to those found in Galactic globular clusters, have some different mean properties.
It is the goal of this study to survey the M31 dwarf spheroidal companions in order to analyze the underlying stellar populations of those galaxies and to see how they compare with what we know of the Galactic dwarf spheroidals and globular clusters.

 Minnesota Technolog
In June 1997, Skillman used the Hubble Telescope to observe the Sextans A, Leo A, Pegasus DIG, and the GR8 dwarf galaxies.
The results, which were presented in a paper in September, 1998, showed that the Sextans A galaxy went through a period of intense star formation about 300 million years ago and these "younger" stars could be easily distinguished from older, helium-burning stars, which can be up to tens of billions of years old.
Data collected from the GR8 dwarf galaxy suggested that star formation occurred in one region of the galaxy, moved to a different region, and then moved back to a region that has had previous star formation.

 Andromeda Galaxy
Andromeda's satellite (or "companion") galaxies include M32 and M110, two bright dwarf elliptical galaxies that are the brightest of a swarm of smaller companions.
Satellite galaxy M32 may be interacting to distort the disk structure of Andromeda itself, whose spiral arms of neutral hydrogen are displaced from those consisted of stars by around 4,000 light-years and so cannot be continuously followed in the area closest to its smaller neighbor.
By capturing both faint dwarf stars and bright giant stars, astronomers were able to estimate the age of many members of Andromeda's halo population by analyzing color and brightness distributions.
