  Pegasus crossing - Biocrawler
A Pegasus Crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing in the United Kingdom which has a special consideration for horse riders.
Normally, they are in the form of a pelican crossing but simply have a control panel slightly higher up so that people riding horses can reach the button easily, and the "Green Man" and "Red Man" pictograms are replaced with horses.
Additional features include wooden safety fence, and a wider crossing so that the horses are further away from cars than normal.

  Zebra crossing
A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing, characterised by stripes (hence the term, named after the zebra) on the road, parallel to the flow of the traffic, alternatingly a light color (usually white) and a dark one (fl, or, if the road surface itself is of a dark color, just that).
In the United Kingdom the crossing is marked with beacons on either side of the road, called Belisha beacons, These are the fl and white poles topped by flashing orange globes.
This is in contrast to a similar crossing, known as a pelican crossing (Pedestrian Light Controlled), which is marked with traffic lights for the vehicles and a green and red man lighting up to show pedestrians when to cross and when to stay.

Pedestrian Crossings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Crossings are safety features designed to keep pedestrians where they can be seen, by motorists, and where they can cross safely against the flow of traffic.
There are a variety of different crossings, these may consist of road markings and beacon poles such as a zebra crossing, however, on busier or faster roads, more sophisticated crossings are used consisting of electric lamps or light-emitting diode (LED) panels with a button to trigger the signal.
There are informal crossing points such as pedestrian refuges with drop crossings, and often tactile paving to assist pedestrians cross the road, or there are formal crossing points where vehicles are expected to stop to allow pedestrians to cross in front of them.
