	Pekan Lake
		Pekan is a very small, relatively shallow lake, in the Lac La Croix drainage basin, 17½ miles east of Crane Lake and 28½ miles NNW of Ely.
		Pekan is a short bushwhack portage to the east of Green Lake which is, in turn, a link in the Gebeonequet/Oyster route, running south from the mouth of Gebeonequet Creek on Pocket Creek, through Gebeonequet, Green, and Rocky lakes, to Oyster.
		Pekan Lake is probably named for the Pekan, another name for the large northern weasel, the Fisher (Martes pennanti) once trapped extensively for its rich, silver-tipped fur and sold as sable.

		Dave and I knew to be on the lookout at the Pekan Sehari for the Pahang delicacy called satar, a paste of fish, coconut, lemongrass, and chilies, wrapped in triangular banana leaf packets, skewered three to a stick, and grilled.
		In the early nineties Temerloh was promoted by Malaysia's Tourism ministry as "Bandar Ikan Patin" (Town of Patin Fish), after a variety of catfish that is said to derive its especially sweet flavor from the shellfish and aquatic plants particular to the town's stretch of the Pahang River.
		The beauty of Temerloh's Pekan Sehari is that it's far enough, and enough of a contrast to where we came from, to comprise a sort of mini-vacation.

	Pekan Peduli Orang Utan Declared
		The declaration, presented at a press conference announcing the special week, was the culmination of an effort among supporters of the Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative (OUREI) to have International Orangutan Awareness Week given government recognition during the month of November.
		Thousands of signatures were collected throughout year and those signatures were presented to OUREI Ambassador Angelina Sondakh last July and this November. Efforts by her office to gain ministerial support were ultimately successful. Pekan Peduli Orang Utan (PPOU) was chosen as the Indonesian equivalent for Orangutan Awareness Week which occurred the week before (Nov 6-12).
		During the press conference that was held in the Operations Room of the Indonesian Parliament Building, OUREI Chairman, Dr. Gary Shapiro, publicly presented a certificate of appointment to Angelina Sondakh as OUREI Ambassador and a certificate of appreciation to Minister Kaban for making the official declaration.
