In the light of this, perhaps it is not strange that Himanen, in the same interview, argues that the Internet "was not built by corporations and governments but by some passionate individuals who shared their creations freely with others".
To the contrary of Himanen, it may be possible to argue that the birth of the information age is connected with the reestablishment of restrictions on the flow of information in science and in art through copyright, and the introduction of the copyrighting of naturally occurring phenomena (like genes).
Though Himanen recognises the current structure of business may be adverse both to free flow of information and to egalitarian questioning, he seems to think that ethics can override structure, and this is why the book may fail as sociology.

For Himanen, hacker culture exemplifies an alternative approach to modern life, one centered less on work than on play, less on grim discipline than dedicated passion, less on proprietary interests than on collaboration, less on profit than on free exchange.
Himanen's thesis is that while the rise of the networked society does not in itself alter the core values of Western, capitalist culture, it does offer an opportunity to examine those values and to reshape them in ways that may make for a happier future.
As the title of Himanen's book suggests, his work is written in response to Weber, and it seeks, on some level, to replace it as the definitive description of an age.

The first part of the paper deals with the hackers' visions that gave rise to the internet as analysed by Pekka Himanen in his book "The Hacker Ethic." According to Himanen, hacker ethic is a passionate ethic of work that is seen as an alternative to predominant Protestant ethic in capitalist societies.
A key issue in the creation of a free digital space, which according to Berner-Lee's dream should be "a space in which anything could be linked to anything," was the elimination of the 'operator' "comparable in experience to the elimination of telephone operators" allowing a free and direct exchange between individuals.
It seems prima facie paradoxical to oppose, as Himanen does, hacker's ethic which is a 'work ethic' to Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism instead of considering it in opposition to an ethic of leisure.
