The battle for Peleliu Island, the Gateway to the Philippines, was the longest and one of the most hard-fought battles in the entire Central Pacific amphibious operations of World War II.
While some strategists have argued that the capture of Peleliu was not a necessary preliminary for the coming struggle in the Philippines, brave men bled and died in the Palaus for their beliefs and their loyalties.
Peleliu's garrison amounted to approximately 10,500 men of whom 6,500 were combat troops and some 4,000 were naval personnel.

Peleliu Battlefield, recognized as a National Historic Landmark, includes all of Peleliu Island, which is a state in the Republic of Palau.

The Palaus are an eighty-mile-long island chain, two of which were selected as targets for their potential airfields and relatively weak defenses: Peleliu and Angaur, six miles apart in the southern area of the chain.
Peleliu was 5½ miles long and 2½ wide with an airfield in the south and a swamp in the east.
The Peleliu airfield was useful, not only in support of operations on Peleliu, but as the base for the air defense of the important fleet anchorage established at nearby Ulithi.

Peleliu is just over twenty square miles in size, and has a similar shape to that of a lobster claw.
The southern end of the island is flat and open (well suited to the construction of an airfield) while the centre is dominated by the Umurbrogol Mountain that is, in actual fact, a series of limestone coral ridges, much of which is blanketed by thick jungle.

USS PELELIU is named in honor of the Third Amphibious Force's assault and capture of the island of Peleliu.
From the initial wave of Marines hitting Peleliu's beaches on September 15th, until the fury of combat was finally still on October 26, 1944, the 1st Marine Division suffered 6,526 casualties, of which 1,252 were killed in action.
PELELIU arrived at Naval Air Station, San Diego on June 10th for a one-day stop prior to proceeding to Long Beach, CA, her homeport.

On Peleliu Island several hillside and ravine caves were cleared of enemy troops and a small hill was occupied as Marines made some progress in reducing the last stubborn pocket of enemy resistance.
Pagan Island was bombed by Seventh Air Force Liberators on October 22 and strafed by Thunderbolts on October 23 and 24.
Rota Island was strafed by Corsairs of the Second Marine Aircraft Wing on October 22, 23, and 24.

Babeldaob, the largest island, covers about 128 square miles or more than 70 percent of the entire land base; however, it is on the smaller island of Oreor to the south where most of the population resides and where most of the economic activity takes place; Oreor is also the capital.
The Rock Islands, with their white sand beaches, world?class diving and lush vegetation, are recognized by many in Palau as having great development potential for tourists and as a source of economic gain.
The entire island of Bliliou was included in the recommendation for nomination as a national historic landmark, except for the area encompassed by the two villages, Kloulklubed and Imelechol, at the northern end of the island.

The basic strategy in the Pacific theatre was that of "island hopping." The main premise of this strategy was to move from one island to another crossing the Pacific and eventually arriving in Japan.
The main objective on the island was to capture an airfield for United States use in preparing for the invasion of the Japanese mainland.
When it came time to evaluate Peleliu, he tells me, the board decided that the attack had been "unnecessary," and that the island "should have been avoided." His last job for the Navy was to assist in the writing of the Navy’s Official Book on amphibious combat.

At the southern end of Peleliu, Hanneken's 7th Marines were forced to land their assault amtracs in a column due to the wreckage and clutter out on the reef, but were making progress against heavy opposition from Japanese dug in on the eastern and southern peninsulas.
With southern and eastern Peleliu captured, the focus had shifted to the encirclement of the Umurbrogol and the elimination of remaining Japanese units on northern Peleliu and on the nearby island of Ngesebus.
Peleliu is a six-mile long, 2 mile wide chunk of blood-soaked coral located approximately 550 miles due east of the Southern Philippines.
