About the City of New York/Parks and Recreation
Pelham has one of the most divers groups of ecosystems of any New York City park, including 13 mile of rocky shoreline, 195 acres of saltwater wetland, 161 acres of mud flats, 520 acres of forest, and 83 acres of meadow.
Pelham provides textbook examples of the zones of a salt marsh: high marsh, flooded only by the highest tides-once or twice a month-or by severe storms; inter-tidal marsh, flooded twice daily at high tides; and mud flats, barren expanses of mud and silt flushed regularly by the tides.
When you visit Pelham, be sure to stop by the Nature Center on Twin Island and take a walk on the Kazimiroff Nature Trail on Hunter Island, which has two patches of evergreen trees, the only significant stands of conifers in Pelham's 520 acres of forest.

Foundation Sires - Curwen's Bay Barb
The Bay Barb was said to have died at the remarkable age of 38.
The overwhelming number of galloways identifed with the Curwen Bay Barb indicates that either he was a particularly small stallion that sired the same, or that he was bred to many mares of native British breeding, which would have been likely in Cumbria, bordering, as it does, on the Scottish counties of Dumfries and Galloway.
The Curwen Bay Barb was a bay with a blaze, and since it's much more common to see such extensive white markings on a chestnut rather than on a bay or brown, it's possible that this stallion was a sabino or rabicano carrier.

The study, entitled "An Evaluation of Childhood Leukemia in the Pelham Bay Area of the Bronx," was prompted by residents' concern that the Pelham Bay landfill may have caused elevated disease rates in the surrounding population.
These studies had been done to address concerns that cancer clusters near the Pelham Bay landfill were caused by toxic materials from that site, and had found no elevated rates of childhood leukemia in the population adjacent to the landfill.
Because plaintiffs' epidemiological and toxicological experts failed to use generally accepted scientific methodology, their opinions that the Pelham Bay landfill was a substantial contributing factor to the acute lymphoid leukemia that occurred in all but two of the plaintiffs lacked a proper foundation and was therefore inadmissible as evidence.
