Pelham is a small, pleasant town perched on the ridge that divides the Connecticut River's Pioneer Valley from Quabbin Reservoir and central Massachusetts.
Settled in 1739 by Scottish Immigrants, Pelham was incorporated as a town in 1743.
Pelham's Old Meeting House, built in 1743, is the oldest town hall in continuous use in the nation and is still the site of the Fall Town Meeting, often referred to as the purest form of democracy practiced widely in New England communities.

August 20, 1643 -- Anne Hutchinson and all of her colony (except her daughter Susanna) are massacred by Siwanoy Indians led by Chief Wampage; Throckmorton colony is also attacked though many of the colonists were away on a trip to Gravesend, Brooklyn.
1940 -- Town of Pelham population is 12,274 (roughly the same as in the 2000 census).
1975 -- the Villages of Pelham ("Pelham Heights") and North Pelham are merged to become the current Village of Pelham; the Pelham Fire District is eliminated and the fire department is merged into the new combined village.

 History
War came to Pelham Manor on October 18, 1776 when Sir William Howe, Commander-in-Chief of the British army, landed 4,000 English and Hessian troops near the stables on Pelham Parkway in an action which became the first permanent invasion of the American mainland in the American Revolution.
The main significance of the Battle of Pelham lay in the fact that it bought time for Washington to remove the American army from an extremely perilous position and to retreat to White Plains.
The election for incorporation was held at the Pelham Manor School House on Monday, June 8, 1891.

 Historic Pelham
Thomas Pell, described as a swashbuckling soldier of fortune, purchased the lands that include today's Town of Pelham from the Siwanoys on June 27, 1654.
Since then Pelham has been witness to a history that is truly a microcosm of the rich history of the United States.
The tree was a stylized view of Thomas Pell's Treaty Oak surrounded by its circular iron fence as shown in a famous photograph taken in about 1903.
