		Pelicans nest in colonies on sandbars, islands, and peninsulas in remote, undisturbed areas.
		In Wisconsin, pelicans are only known to nest on Cat Island near Green Bay and on Catttail, Pelican, and Snag Islands in the middle of the Horicon Marsh refuge.
		Pelicans lay an average of two eggs and incubate them using their feet since they don't have the typical "brood patch" of bare skin on the belly.

		About five years ago near Blue River, Wis., in northern Grant County (southwest Wisconsin) a DNR official reported seeing a cougar.
		As a young girl I was raised in Pelican Lake.
		We had a sighting in Merrill Wisconsin of a cougar inside the city limits,(I also saw one a couple miles -- if that-- from the city limits)...the in city limits sighting was just a couple city blocks from the elementry school.

		White pelicans were seen in the state at least as early as the 1600s on Lake Winnebago, by French Jesuits, but it is not known whether the birds were nesting or just passing through, said Tom Erdman, curator of the Richter Museum of Natural History in Green Bay.
		Unlike the brown pelican, which dives for its food, white pelicans use their pouched bills to dip for fish near the surface, something that's very interesting to watch, Erdman said.
		Last year, 300 pelicans were born on the island, but Erdman said he would be lucky to count 200 this year, again because of the long, chilly spring.

	Pelicans on the Upper Mississippi River
		This is my first encounter with the pelicans in the six years I have been doing outdoor photography.
		The pelicans were soaring into a forty mph wind against a clear blue sky.
		Mary Stefanski, refuge operations specialist with the La Crosse District office of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is currently unaware of any nesting colonies of pelicans in Wisconsin, but is requesting that birders keep an eye out for pelicans of breeding age.
