 Pelog
Pelog is one of the two essential scales of Gamelan music native to Bali and Java, in Indonesia.
This is at the very extreme of the range of intervals that can be perceived as a fourth, and rapid beating between the upper harmonics (actually inharmonic overtones in the case of the metallophones which form the bulk of the gamelan orchestra) contributes to the unique shimmering sound of the gamelan.
The seven tones of the pelog scale, in circle-of-fourths order, are called "barang", "dada", "nem", "gulu", "lima", "bem", and "pelog" (the latter note bears the same name as the scale as a whole).

Commonly used for both dance and concert music, this piece begins with a playful melody that may reflect the title which refers to the movement of a kapok seed as it gets caught in the eddies and swirls of a river current.
The first section of this piece is popular in Central Java and can be played in three different modes, both scales, and occasionally with a different name.

Pelog Partita naturally enough, was conceived as a counterpart to Slendro Suite, as pelog and slendro are the two classes of tuning systems found in the traditional music of Java.
While slendro features five pitches distributed roughly equally within the octave, pelog has seven separated by clearly unequal step sizes.
This gives pelog a very different character, and more possibilities.

This system reverses the axes of pitch and time as used in the western classical system: pitch is shown on the horizontal axis (vertical lines spaced from left to right; pitches are on lines only, there are no "spaces" as in western notation) and time is shown by progress from top to bottom.
For slendro there are six vertical lines, one for each pitch plus pitch one in the upper octave; for pelog there are seven, one for each tone (no upper octave).

Although pelog is a seven key scale, selisir deletes 4 and 7 and uses only a pentatonic scale (1, 2, 3, 5, and 6).
Unlike Javanese pelog, the 4 and 7 keys are not on the instruments; thus, unlike Javanese pelog, one cannot play different tunings (pathets) on the same instrument.
The purpose of the deletion seems to be to allow the instrument to be played faster since the keys are closer together.
