 GROWING SEASON STATUS
The vuli (short) rains in the coastal region, north-eastern highlands, and Lake Victoria region of Tanzania were erratic, resulting in 60% vuli crop failure as the season came to an end in December.
Cumulative rainfall in northeastern highlands (Arusha, Manyara, and Kilimanjaro regions), and northern coast (Tanga, Coast, and Dar es Salaam), and the Islands of Zanzibar and Pemba was far below normal vuli rains for the period of September to December.
Dry spells experienced aggravated the soil moisture deficit situation confining nearly the whole of the bimodal region of Tanzania to land preparation stage.

A Global Representative System of Marine Protected Areas
Pemba (Misali, Mtangani, Matumbe and NW Pemba) (5-8'S, 39-46'E): The marine habitats of Pemba, which is surrounded by deep water and strong ocean currents are likely to be particularly significant; the waters are exceptionally clear and the reefs are well developed and very diverse with exceptional fish life.
Throughout the region, reefs play an important role in coastal protection, fisheries and tourism, but are nevertheless under serious threat from diverse factors including over-utilization and coastal development, compounded by lack of awareness and lack of trained and experienced personnel available for reef management.
The north and west coasts support some of the most extensive stands of mangroves in the region, for example at Baie de Bombetoka (46,000 hectares) on the Betsiboka River, the low human population density here being largely responsible for their survival, and at Baie de la Mahajamba further north.
