The main obstacle on the road to Pemba used to be the Zambesi ferry, but two superb new ferries have been commissioned since March 2005 and the long delays now seem to be a thing of the past.
One recent accident near Pemba took 3 lives when two trucks blocked the road, the one with headlights on full bright and the other facing the other way with nil taillights.
From Nampula northwards to Pemba Bay much of the road in April (end of the rainy season) is lined on both sides by a thick forest of elephant grass 3 meters high.

Coming from the north, you should make it in 2 days from Palm to Nampula (1 day to Pemba and 1 to Nampula).
If you're leaving to Pemba, you have either choice to take the bus to Namialo and then wait for the Nampula/Pemba bus, which passes in the early morning or you continue the way to Nampula and take the bus on the next morning.
If you're heading to Pemba, you should arrive to Namialo early in the morning, ince the chapas heading north to Pemba are scarce after 8 am.
