Cancellation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On mail, a cancellation (or cancel for short) is a postal marking applied to a postage stamp or postal stationery indicating that the item has been used.
Handmade cancels were typically carved from cork and are known in a bewildering variety of creative designs, collectively known as fancy cancels.
Pen cancels may still occasionally be seen (sometimes done with marker), typically when a postal clerk notices that a stamp has not been touched by the automated machinery (though there have sometimes been complaints by stamp collectors of redundant pen cancels by overzealous postal employees).

Pen cancel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the early, pre-ballpoint pen days of adhesive stamps it took longer to apply a pen cancel than a handstamp, which led to the development of handstamped cancellation devices.
Pen cancels are sometimes seen today, as, in order not to lose revenue through stamp reuse, postal employees are instructed to obliterate (through use of pen-cancellation, among other possible methods), stamps missed by the cancelling machine.
Depending on the type of pen or marker used, a pen cancel may destroy the value for stamp-collecting purposes of a used stamp, or the cover if it is saved on cover, and this has led to complaints by stamp collectors that postal employees accused of overzealousness have applied overly thick and enthusiastic marker cancels.

POST OFFICE IN PARADISE - Cancels
However, three cancels, including two in Davey's "various circular devices" in the section he titled "Circles" fall outside the five categories he created and are just too difficult to classify within his types.
Without counting the myriad of pen cancellations, these pages list 128 cancels, but some listings include multiple marks from different devices so the actual total is greater — probably around 140 - including 20 marks identified by Davey but not confirmed by Jim Shaffer or me. Davey identified 82 cancels in his study.
In most cases, the cancel inventory is extremely uncertain so expect major changes in the attempt given here to state the rarity, scarcity or estimated quantity of cancels.

CTOs offer a viable collecting alternative
The cancels may be printed on the stamps at the same time that the stamp design is printed.
Either neat corner cancel would please most collectors of used stamps, but the stamp on the left is a CTO (with original gum) and that on the right is a postally used stamp soaked from a cover.
From this perspective, even a nicely canceled stamp soaked off a mailpiece is not as desirable as a CTO with pristine, unwrinkled paper and original gum.

Back then, stamps were often cancelled with pens, and a pen-cancelled stamp is generally worth less than half as much of one hand-stamped with a canceller.
Pen cancels are easily removed by cleaning (creating a fake unused stamp) or by covering them with a hand-cancel, more than doubling the value automatically.
Perforations were clipped off to make coils and imperfs, imperforate stamps perforated, designs drawn in, cancels removed or added (sometimes both), straight edges and existing perforations reperforated, repairs and faults covered with new cancels and most items cleaned.
