A Yorkshire Dales Walk - Penyghent from Litton
A different approach to and ascent of Penyghent is provided by this walk that starts and finishes in the village of Litton in Littondale.
After our extended break we moved onto the Penyghent plateau at Plover Hill and walked, often in bog as the Plover Hill area of the hill is a bugger to walk.
We knew the way from the moor as the Dawson Close bridle road to Litton was in clear view as we had descended from Penyghent.

Penyghent Long Churn is not so picturesque but drops down to an awe-inspiring depth of what looked like about 100 ft or so.
The view from the top of Penyghent never really impresses me; to the west is a good view of Ingleborough but its profile is far less distinctive than when viewed from the north.
Between Penyghent and Fountains Fell is a stretch of about a mile of road walking as shown on the latest guide books, but the earlier route went along the hillside.

Now Penyghent Pot was established as the deepest cave in Yorkshire it became the target for a number of other clubs, all wishing to descend what was, at that time, one of the severest trips in the country.
It is as well to check at this stage that one has a good pair of kneepads as the crawling continues unabated for 1000 feet to the head of the first pitch.
"Penyghent knees" are a common complaint, a product of inadequately protected knees and numbingly cold water which gives one no inkling of the damage one is doing.

Penyghent Pot was finished and sundry digs and prospects had turned out blank.
We did not tackle this one as bends in the passage were a trifle too acute to allow of the passage of the short lengths of scaling ladder.

Penyghent Pot was discovered in late 1949, by the N.P.C. The cave with its notorious entrance filled for most of the part by icy water, the thirteen wet pitches and a total depth of some five hundred feet was soon to hit the headlines.
The pot had already been the scene of a rescue in May 1951, which resulted in the death of John William's one of seven members of the B.S.A. who descended the cave on May 18th at eleven a.m.
The tragedy of John Williams was fresh in the mind of every caver that day, determination and the sheer bulk of cavers ensured the rescue was not a repetition of the fatality of the previous three weeks.
