Ganilau first aired his opposition to the bill on 4 May 2005, saying that it was an unwarranted interference in the judicial process and represented a naïve and uncaring attitude to people who had suffered as a result of the coup.
Ganilau was a guest speaker at the Lautoka conference of the Fiji Labour Party, with which his own party is considering forming a coalition to contest the general election scheduled for 2006, on 30 July 2005.
Ganilau hails from the village of Somosomo, in Taveuni.

Ratu Sir Penaia Kanatabatu Ganilau (28 July 1918-15 December 1993) was the first President of Fiji, serving from 8 December 1987 till his death.
Ganilau was educated at Northern Provincial School, Queen Victoria Memorial School and Wadham College, Oxford University, whence he graduated from the Devonshire Course for administration officers in 1946.
A scion of the chiefly Ai Sokula clan, Ganilau was installed in 1988 as the fourteenth Tui Cakau, the traditional ruler of Cakaudrove Province.

Ratu Ganilau was Governor General at the time of the 1987coups carried out by Lieutenant Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka.
