Penalty (ice hockey) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A penalty in ice hockey is a punishment for inappropriate behavior, or the inappropriate behavior itself (whether called or not).
For infractions that are too minor to deserve a penalty such as icing, hand passes, and offsides, the team is penalized by a faceoff closer to their end, but this is not a penalty under the rules of hockey.
The record for the most penalty minutes in one season is held by Dave Schultz of the Philadelphia Flyers with 472 in the 1974-75 NHL season.

In ice hockey, a penalty shot is a type of penalty awarded when a team loses a clear scoring opportunity because of a foul committed by an opposing player.
Penalty shots are most commonly awarded when a player is fouled from behind on a breakaway and is not able to take a shot.
If a penalty shot is awarded and the penalized team had pulled their goaltender in favour of an extra attacker, an automatic goal is awarded in lieu of the penalty shot.

Instead, their penalties are served by a teammate that was on the ice at the time of the infraction.
Icing occurs when the puck is shot from behind the centerline (or the defensive blue line in some amateur and European leagues) down the rink to a point beyond the opponent’s goal line, without another player touching the puck.
