		As Penda was a pagan, and his alleged victims all Christian, it comes as no surprise to find that medieval chroniclers, mostly monks or Christian nobles, viewed his reign and deeds with horror and denigrated him at every opportunity.
		Penda may have been responsible, as a warlord, for leading warriors against them, but to have cast him as a murderer seems both harsh and inappropriate.
		Penda must have had reasons for doing what he did to Oswald's corpse, and the sacrificial explanation certainly fits the bill; but it is unlikely that we will ever know exactly what happened, or that we will be privy to any motive Penda may have had.
