The Sands at Pendine provides around 4 miles of firm, straight-line running, the condition of which is, unfortunately, determined by the preceding tide, sea state and wind direction.
The village of Pendine is situated near the western end of Pendine Sands.
In 1933 Amy Johnson and her husband, Jim Mollinson, took off from Pendine Sands in a De Havilland Dragon Rapide to fly non-stop to the United States.

Pendine is famous for the sands which stretch for 7 miles between Gilman Point in the west to Laugharne Sands in the east.
Pendine was ideal for World land speed records and in 1924 Malcolm Campbell, driving Bluebird, set a speed record of 146.16 mph (235.22 km/h) on the Sands.
Pendine Sands is sometimes used as a stage in motor rally events, but spectator access may be restricted for safety reasons.

Pendine Sands had been well used for racing cars and motorcycles by 1920 with the annual Welsh TT race starting in 1922, but the sands were not used for Land Speed Record attempts till 1924.
At the western end a small stream runs under the sands to the sea and to this day still creates a patch of extremely soft sand which has to be crossed during a run up to the measured mile.
In the centre of the photograph can be seen The Museum of Speed at Pendine opened in 1966 and this has a detailed history of record breaking on Pendine Sands as well as a display of vehicles which are periodically changed.

Access to the beach at Pendine is controlled by the Community Council who own the slipway, and the vast majority of the beach, say 98% of it, is controlled by the military who use it for munitions testing during office hours.
Pendine may be a fine beach, but frankly the village itself leaves a lot to be desired.
Babs was buried in the sand at the site of the crash until the 1960s when she was excavated and has since been restored to her former glory.

Pendine is one of my favourite beaches, with a mixture of sand sea shells and rocks, great for the kids with their fishing nets.
The local people buried the remains of the car in the sand, but in 1969 amid much public outcry, Babs was excavated and is now fully restored.
The large building on the left is the Beach Hotel built around 1840 (Tel: 01994 453469) which hosted the land speed record teams of the 1920s, and today still offers accomodation and a good selection of beers..

Wales is the grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell, and he's carrying on a tradition which goes back more than three-quarters of a century.
Parry Thomas's 26.9-litre "Babs" managed 171mph on Pendine two years after Sir Malcolm, but the last of the Welsh course's LSRs was set by Campbell again, in the 1927 Napier-Campbell Bluebird, just three miles per hour faster.
After that, Pendine didn't have the length to accommodate the run-up and braking distances needed by the monster pre-war record cars, which moved to Daytona Beach in Florida and, later, the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

John Godfrey Parry-Thomas was the son of a vicar and born in Wrexham in April 1884.
As the competition for the record increased Parry-Thomas wanted another crack at it; he knew Henry Seagrave was to attempt a run for 200 mph, in Florida.
He arrived back in Pendine, unwell with 'Flu', in March 1927 and with the assistance of Shell and Dunlop staff began to prepare the car for a run on the beach.

Although the turtle found at Pendine was big, it came nowhere near the size of the world's largest leatherback turtle which was washed up on a north Wales beach in 1988.
The 2.75m-long (9ft) creature was found near Harlech, more than 7,500km (4,700 miles) from its birthplace in the West Indies.

Pendine Sands is a large beach in South Wales, mostly owned by the Ministry of Defence and used as a bombing range during the week.
It's known as THE number one spot in the UK for Traction Kite related sports (buggying, boarding etc), and people travel from all over the UK to get to this mecca of a place, to fly on it's massive expanse of sand.
This blanket ban will also affect the Traction Kiters, who are one of the most responsible, safety conscious groups of people you could meet, and who mostly have £5 million third party liability insurance.
