The fourth volume of Lawhead's ambitious Pendragon cycle, in which he attempts to combine Atlantean myths and the Matter of Britain, arrives at last at the reign of Arthur, and Lawhead's treatment is admirably original.
In it, Gwenwhyvar (that is, Guinevere) is faithful to her lord; Arthur is Christian, though not kind to meddling, corrupt, or lazy clerics; and the climactic battle is fought against unusual but not implausible enemies, the Vandals and the Irish.
Pendragon is barely a remixt of the past two books, with the difference that the foe, instead of being plenty (Saecsens, picts, irish, scots...), are only two, the Vandali and the plague, but they are more powerful.

He was Arthur -- Pendragon of the Island of the Mighty -- who would rise to legendary greatness in a Britain torn by violence, greed, and war; who would usher in a glorious reign of peace and prosperity; and who would fall in a desperate attempt to save the one be loved more than life.
He was Arthur -- Pendragon of the Island of the Mighty -- who would rise to legendary greatness in war-torn Britain; who would usher in an era of peace and prosperity; who would fall in a desperate attempt to save his beloved.
Most of the beloved parts of the Arthur legend are from the sword in the stone, to the Lady of the Lake to the dissapearance of Avalon, Lawhead does it all in one novel.

In the fourth volume of Lawhead's Pendragon saga, Merlin (Myrdinn) narrates the story of the beginning of Arthur's reign, his marriage to Guinevere (Gwenwhyvar) and his battles against invaders.
In "Pendragon", Lawhead expands on a part of the story about king Arthur that he has already described by recounting one of the struggles that the king Arthur faced in the early days of his kingship.
Pendragon is the fourth of Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle, an excellent reimagining of the King Arthur legend.

To begin, I'd like to say that the Pendragon Cycle is a brilliant work, and the other books in it stand without this, frankly, unnecessary work.
The traditional tales of King Arthur ends with Arthur disappearing mysteriously, an event depicted magnificently at the end of Pendragon Cycle 3: Arthur, as Arthur sails off to Merlin's Grandfather's palace on Avallon - a secluded island (marked as the Isle of Wight on the map at the beginning).
This was the first of the Pendragon Cycle series of books that I read, and after reading it I had to buy the other four!

 LAWHEAD, Stephen R. “Pendragon Cycle” - www.ezboard.com
In Avalon, Stephen Lawhead has modernized the king Arthur of his delightful Pendragon cycle, and transported him to a futuristic and contemporary twenty-first century Britain, which is on the verge of throwing out the monarchy for good.
The Pendragon Cycle is clearly a prelude to this story, and I would suggest that it is required reading for readers of Avalon.
As a followup to the Pendragon Cycle, Avalon is equally suspenseful and exciting, sparkling with originality, action and intrigue, although some characters and sequences lack imagination and depth.

Fantasy Finder - S. Lawhead: The Pendragon Cycle
The Pendragon Cycle, Stephen Lawhead's retelling of the myths of King Arthur, was his break-through as a major fantasy writer.
Many of the characters are so competent and pure of heart, but Bedwyr knows well that he is more of a swordsman than a thinker, which makes his remarks and thoughts quite charming.
To return to Arthur's youth in "Pendragon" after reading about his last battle at Camlann in "Arthur" seems quite strange to me. I guess the reason is that the series originally was meant to end with "Arthur", "Pendragon" and "Grail" being later additions.

Pendragon and Grail fill out Arthur's story, recounting the adventures which lead to Arthur's eventual crowning as Pendragon, and the gripping tale of Arthur's battle to retain control of the Holy Grail, the healing cup of Christ which comes to symbolise the peace and prosperity of his reign.
Throughout, the Celts are portrayed as a people emerging from Roman domination, embracing Christianity and establishing their rule in the face of invading Saxons.
The Pendragon Cycle is a feast of sustained storytelling power to inspire readers like no other version of this entrancing mythology.

VWN Product Review: Pendragon : Book Four of the Pendragon Cycle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Set against the backdrop of a receding roman empire and the struggles for power within the newly leaderless British people, the Pendragon cycle paints a vivid picture of a warring nation in which many changes are being wrought.
Beginning with the fall of Atlantis and the escape of its people to British shores, the novels tell the stories of the key figures of Arthurian legend, primarily narrated by Merlin.
While there sometimes seems to be an unnecessary level of monotony, as well as a warping of the precise details of the original myths, the novels do provide an interesting (though not necessarily accurate) re-telling of a great British legend.

With "Arthur", the third title in his acclaimed "Pendragon Cycle", Lawhead finally progress beyond the stage-setting scenes of the first two titles.
Not surprisingly, the spotlight in this novel is Arthur, as Lawhead chronicles his progression from a fatherless and unknown teenager, to the Duke of Britain, to the High King of Britain, and finally to the Emperor of the West.
