Process music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Process music or systems music is music which arises from a process, and more specifically, music which makes that process audible.
Michael Nyman has described how the generally minimalistic tonal music associated with process music arose from the influence of and reaction against process based music of extreme determinism or indeterminism using serial, aleatoric, and stochastic methods.
Within the field of popular music, process music made its strongest early appearance in the ambient works of Brian Eno, notably his first foray into the genre, Discreet Music.

Pendulum Music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pendulum Music is the name of a work by Steve Reich, involving suspended microphones and speakers, creating phasing feedback tones.
The music created is then the result of the process of the swinging microphones.
Reich specifies the piece should continue until all the microphones are at rest over the speakers, each emitting a continuous tone.

But, it was soon apparent that this music was not of an enduring quality, and before long it became tiresome to the ear of the musician as well as that of the congregation.
The symbolic use of musical instruments during the middle ages tends to becloud the issue, and direct conclusions to performance practice cannot be validly made from art-representations of angels holding instruments.
But, unfortunately, in the field of church music the greatest stress was laid on the affective representation of individual words or phrases of the text, with the composer giving full reign to his personal emotions and the liturgical text being little more than an excuse for the expression of these feelings.

GRANVILLE -- Faculty and student musicians from Denison University's music department will put their skills to work at a concert of avant garde compositions that are based in some part on the principal of chance.
The music that plays during those times on those stations, however, is not controlled and so the "composition" is a "chance operation."
The piece ends when the pendulums stop swinging, a chance that is determined by the length of the pendulums, their weight, the force of the initial pushes, and so forth.

Reich's music explores such ideas in contemporary music as using tape loops to create phasing patterns - amongst Reich's first works, It's Gonna Rain, Come Out, Drumming, and others, and using processes to create and explore concepts in music (Pendulum Music, Four Organs).
He moved on to other musical processes such as augmentation (the temporal lengthening of phrases and melodic fragments).

In the case of a symphony, the music is obviously fabricated by a human being, and is not something that one could ever simply find in nature, but in other music, and particularly in some recent music, this is not the case at all.
Consider the Pendulum Music of Steve Reich, in which one simply lets a microphone swing over a loudspeaker, allowing periodic feedback sounds to be produced however they will.

Krieger's second Walls of Sound release features five 1960s 'pattern music' works by seminal American composers Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley, all of whom were determined during that decade to break free of perceived musical 'dead ends' like Serialism.
Given their pronounced conceptual focus, these earlier works are more 'academic' than the composers' more audience-friendly current material (Glass's symphonies, for example) yet Krieger's album provides a thoroughly engrossing listen and serves a valuable historical purpose in exposing important music of this era to new listeners.
As with much of Glass's music during this period, the tempo and volume remain constant, making it a good example of what Krieger calls 'static music,' music whose slowly mutating patterns eschew conventional narrative or development.
