		Canisteo River Valley from Pinnacle State Park The distant peaks at the same elevation represent the remnants of a peneplain that was uplifted to form the Allegheny Plateau, which is a dissected plateau in southwestern NY.
		A peneplain is final stage in fluvial or stream erosion.
		The streams within a peneplained region show extensive meandering and braiding.

		The pattern of the folded strata on the low lying Cretaceous peneplain must have resembled the pattern of the curved grain of wood on a planed board.
		When the peneplain was uplifted the weaker strata were worn down almost to a lowland of a second generation, while the resistant sandstones, of which there are three chief members, retained a great part of their new-gained altitude in the form of long narrow even-crested ridges with an occasional sharp bending in peculiar zigzags.

		A “peneplain” is defined as an extensive area of plateau or low land with undulating surface, bounded by plateaus or plateau remnants, the latter rarely rising as much as 2,000 feet above the “peneplain” at its base.

		The intrusive phase of the FLIP consists primarily of a high level complex of dolerite sills and subordinate connecting and cross-cutting dikes that have intruded near the base of and within flat-lying Devonian to Triassic supracrustal strata of the Beacon Supergroup.
		A sequence of dikes in the southeastern Quartermain Mtns that cross cut sills in that region have compositions similar to the basement and peneplain sills in the Bull Pass region.
		Differences in the compositions of the basement and peneplain sills in each region hint at the possibility that they may be different intrusions.

	Geology
		The peneplain surface is well marked by either yellow-grey-white sandstone resting on a basement of granites, gneisses and schists, or by a chocolate coloured dolerite sill about 1000 – 1200ft thick which has intruded in Jurassic time between the sandstone and the basement.
		Dolerites and sandstone are known from Northern Victoria Land, and the continued existence of the Kukri Peneplain is probable and the accordance of summits seen in the Roberson Bay Group greywackes suggests it might have extended north-east to the Ross Sea and north to the Cape Hallet region.

	Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition
		In the Cretaceous Period this peneplain was gently uplifted again to a great plateau during the same time the Rocky Mountains were formed.
		Also lifted were the rivers of the peneplain which, once elevated, carved steep valleys and canyons into the plateau which was the remnant of the original Appalachian Mountains.
		These flat and narrow tops of the Appalachian Peneplain are what we can see in the distance from a viewing position on the state's highest peaks.

		The land was reduced to an almost flat surface, near sea level, called the Schooley Peneplain.
		As one stands on the observation deck in Perkins Tower, at the top of Bear Mountain, and looks to the west or north the very flat horizon that is observed represents the remains of a peneplain formed in ancient times.

		What is left are only ancient granite hills which lie west of Lake Superior's North Shore and the Laurentian peneplain.
		This peneplain (literally "almost a plain") is a vast, nearly level platform that extends from northeastern Minnesota up through central Canada.
		About one billion years ago ancient seas submerged this peneplain again and again, and then finally retreated to make this the first large part of North America to be more or less permanently elevated above sea level.

		The Peneplain Sill (Ferrar Dolerites) lies on the Kukri Peneplain cut in granites, on the far side of the Miller glacier, Gonville and Caius Range.
		At the Kar Plateau at Granite Harbour the Kukri Peneplain or a flat eroded surface which is almost certainly it, lies at about 2-300ft compared to about 800ft to the south on the Miller Glacier.
		The basement granites, the Kukri Peneplain, the Peneplain Sill and the overlying Beacon Sandstone are all plainly seen.

	Peneplain Peak
		Located on the divide between Coquitlam River and Pitt Lake, north of Widgeon Lake and south of the Five Fingers Group, Peneplain is notable for preserving on its upper surface a chunk of the Eocene erosional surface which predates the formation of the Coast Mountains.
		In Eocene times (early Tertiary), the Coast Mountains did not exist and the area today occupied by them was an essentially level surface of low relief (a peneplain).
		Orogenic uplift resulting from new crustal motion in the late Tertiary, followed by Pleistocene glaciation and erosion, has tended to destroy most of the original peneplain surface.
