The islands' natural harbors and plentiful marine life attracted Chinese fishermen -- and coastal pirates -- long before Penghu was made a part of Chinese territory in 1171 (during the Sung Dynasty).
Paisha island's 300-year-old banyan tree forms the canopy of a small temple's courtyard -- the tree covers nearly half an acre and is anchored by 91 trunks.

One of the things that Penghu is famous for are the stone weirs that fishermen have used for decades to capture fish.

All major roads in the Fujian provincial capital of Fuzhou leading southward to the Dongshan islands where the drills will take place some 250 kilometers northeast of Hong Kong have been taken over by the military, the Beijing-backed Wen Wei Po said.
The paper, citing a military briefing, said the aim of the drills, involving the People's Liberation Army (PLA), air force and navy, was to simulate the seizure of Penghu.
All hotels on Dongshan islands have been booked by the PLA to receive top government and military officials attending the drills.
