Penikese provides sea and wind, the canopy of sky and clouds and stars, and the incessant daytime cawing of seabirds, the true owners of the island.
Penikese is about survival and to survive is to cope with the hard realities of life without electricity, running water or automatic central heating.
But Penikese was hardly a hopeful place a hundred years ago and it would be a stretch to call it that today, given the depth of the problems students at the school are facing today.

Further Notes from Penikese Island Terns
Warden ;Furnet reported the appearance of the Penikese terns on the average date of arrival, and a survey of the island revealed their presence in thousands.
In many of the 5Iassachusetts colonies where the nests are all built on sand with little beach grass, the nests and young are crowded together so that when the young wander from their home into territory claimed by others, they are often so severely pecked about the head while being driven away that they die.
143-156.) in the case of Penikese Island, the terns returned to their nesting colony in the usual numbers in the spring of 1932, and breeding proceeded nor- mally until the season was well advanced.

Louis Agassiz - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
In the last years of his life he worked to establish a permanent school where zoological science could be pursued amid the living subjects of its study.
In 1873 a private philanthropist (John Anderson) gave Agassiz the island of Penikese, in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts (south of New Bedford), and presented him with $50,000 to permanently endow it as a practical school of natural science, especially devoted to the study of marine zoology.
The John Anderson school collapsed soon after Agassiz's death, but is considered a precursor of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, which is nearby.

Penikese Island School (Cat.'99) is the sole inhabitant of a small island 12 miles southwest of Woods Hole, near Cuttyhunk.
It has only 6-9 students at a time; they are very troubled "last chance" teenage boys, referred by the criminal justice system, the Department of Social Services, or schools.
It offers stable, supportive relationships between staff and students to ease the transition from the Island back to their environments, and gives graduates a place to return for strength and renewal.

Cuttyhunk and Penikese Islands, Gosnold, MA Findings in 1996 Buzzards Bay NEP & Coalition's Citizen Monitoring Program
Penikese Island has a few farm animals and a summer population of less than 20.
Cuttyhunk Pond is interesting in that it is a shallow coastal lagoon that is not especially well flushed, and from a hydrographic sense, is similar to some of the less flushed embayments we have studied elsewhere in Buzzards Bay, but with considerably less nitrogen loading.
Still, the mean summertime water transparency for Penikese (1.9 and 2.4 meters in the two years observed) and Cuttyhunk Pond (2.5, 2.9 and 2.1 meters in the three years observed) were far better than most Buzzards bay embayments.

One of the better-known residents of Penikese was 16-year-old Archie Thomas, who arrived in 1912.
By sharing news from the Marconi News Service and communicating with operators on other islands and on passing ships, Archie gave the Penikese lepers their only contact with "ordinary people." When Archie died in 1915, the news was slow to reach the mainland — no one else knew how to use his radio.
Over the years, the average number of lepers living on the island was 14; the inmate population peaked at 17 in the mid 1910s.

Penikese was founded on a deserted, windswept island off Cape Cod in 1972, a last chance for boys caught up in the juvenile justice system.
Robb’s account helps us to make this judgement: Penikese takes credit for turning “a lot of would-be murderers into car thieves.” And the program’s success rate is well shy of the 85% rate of kids sent straight to juvenile incarceration.
And it comes back as an echo when Robb tries to speak to his Penikese students in a language they understand, while at the same time trying to correct their every profanity (and there is no shortage of those).
