Penis envy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Penis envy is the desire to possess the same sexual organ (a penis) as men, which Sigmund Freud believed women unconsciously possess.
Freud's teaching that women suffer from penis envy is generally attributed to the Victorian assertion that male sex organs are better than those of females.
Historically, feminists have explained what penis envy existed as the result of a male-dominated patriarchy, and "penis envy" was the understandable frustration and desire to participate in the power structure, which oppressed women.

Penis Envy (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Penis Envy, released in 1981, was the third LP by anarchist punk band Crass.
The album addressed feminist issues and once again attacked the institutions of 'the system' such as marriage and sexual repression.
A minor tabloid furore erupted once the hoax was revealed, with the News of the World going so far as to state that the album's title was "too obscene to print" (a leaflet giving the background to this situationist-style prank was subsequently issued by the band[2]).

This caused Crass to fundamentally question their approach to making records, for as a group who's very reason for existing was to comment upon political issues, they felt they had been overtaken and made to appear redundant by real world events.
Subsequent releases, including the singles "How does it Feel to Be the Mother of A Thousand Dead" and "Sheep Farming in the Falklands", and the album Yes Sir, I Will, saw the band strip their sound 'back to basics' and were issued as 'tactical responses' to political situations.
For the band's part, they have stated that their musical antecedents and influences were seldom drawn from the rock music tradition, but rather from classical music (particularly Benjamin Britten, from who, Rimbaud states, some of Crass' riffs are direct plagiarisms!), dada and the avant-garde such as John Cage as well as performance art traditions.

By their third album, Penis Envy, their instrumental proficiency had escalated to the level of a teenage garage band.
They learned to make the most of their ugly, marchy, razor-thin sound and decided to do an album almost entirely devoted to feminism and issues that women have to deal with on a daily basis.
Penis Envy gets a lot of flack for this, since they don't sing purty, but their vocals fit the music better than those of Jeff Buckley or Aretha Franklin.

Then along came Sigmund Freud, ego’s id’s and Oedipus and all of a sudden men across the world found their repressed desire to masturbate was being displayed to all and sundry.

The group was frequently embroiled in legal battles with various government agencies but, in an era largely typified by apathy, Crass stands as a remarkably successful model of dead-serious political commitment in rock.
Drawing an ugly parallel between rampant sexism and man's rape of nature and society, the album bounces vibrantly from the strident bash of the ironic rape fantasy "Bata Motel" to the LP's unsettling church-organ coda.
