THE FREE GRAMMAR SCHOOL was found, by an inquisition taken in the 1st of James I to have been endowed from time immemorial, with several messuages, lands, and yearly rent charges.
The school is free to all the sons of parishioners, for English reading, and the classics, but a small charge is made for writing and accounts.
SAMUEL WORDSWORTH, in 1703, bequeathed £400 for the church and Free Grammar School, and £100 for the poor parishioners.

In the mid twentieth century the school ceased to be a grammar school, becoming one of the first neighbourhood comprehensive schools in the country.

Penistone as a settlement can be dated back to the Century of Alfred the Great and was founded somewhere between 800 and 900 A.D..
Penistone Footpath Runners and A.C. cannot claim to be as old as this but has now established a firm base and a high reputation on the local running scene.
The legend was built from there and in 1392 when Penistone Grammar School was founded, they also adopted the birds as their Coat of Arms and the badge has survived until today.

We decided we would like to donate some of the old set of instruments to the schools within the Penistone Area, as we believe we must continue to encourage the youth of today into keeping the brass band movement alive in the area, as Thurlstone Brass Band have since 1854.

He later taught at King's School, Pontefract (Sept 1912 - July 1914), Goole Secondary School (Sept 1914 - Nov 1914), Moulton Grammar School, Spalding (May 1920 - Jul 1923) at which point he joined the South Shields High School in September, 1923, transferring to Harton in 1936.
The dates here are inconsistent with the other dates in his school records, and I suspect that the "1921" should have read "1912" throughout.

I was evacuated from London in October,1940 and billeted in Barnby Dun.I was admitted to Thorne Grammar School the same month after an interview with the then headmaster J.E.Shiplley-Turner and placed in Form 3 Alpha and stayed in that stream until 5 Alpha when I left in the July and returned to London.
My sister Margaret was evacuated with me and was 2 years ahead at school, unfortunately she died earlier this year, before I discovered the T.G.S. Web Site, otherwise I would have been able to forward more names of pupils at that time.
Left school at 16 after telling J.E.S.T. that I was not cut out to teach Latin to a group of 13-year-olds, most of whom were not the slightest bit interested in the language anyway!
