1803 The forerunner of Penlee lifeboat station was a lifeboat stationed at Penzance.
The RNLI established a station at Penlee and a new boathouse and roller slipway were built at Penlee Point.
A flagstaff made from the wreckage of the Solomon Browne, and her flag, were presented to the Dean and Chapter of Truro Cathedral as a memorial and in appreciation of the support given by the Bishop and cathedral authorities to the Penlee families and the RNLI at the time of the disaster.

Some of the men at last weekend’s Penlee reunion won’t see 70 again, but the enthusiasm is as strong today as it ever was.
In the 1970s the Penlee track, in the shadows of the Tararuas near Mt Holdsworth, was a significant venue, attracting the top riders from far and wide, with big crowds turning out to watch the action.
Penlee has long gone, but Ivan Cartmell keeps the tradition going, with the development of the Hughes Line track, on his farm.

The Penlee lifeboat disaster occurred on 19 December 1981 off the south-west coast of England, when the Penlee lifeboat went to the aid of the stricken coaster Union Star in heavy seas.
The conditions were so rough that the crew of the Royal Navy Sea King helicopter sent from RNAS Culdrose were unable to remove any of the eight crew.
However, under new legislation, the coastguard was empowered to declare a mayday and authorise salvage on behalf of a ship's captain.

The Port Penlee development, and the other simultaneous proposed developments in the immediate area, add up to a loss of the loved and familiar that could be psychologically acute.
The problem with the Port Penlee and the extensive Newlyn redevelopment is that it will mean a sudden and massive influx of newcomers who are sure to upset the established equilibrium and this is guaranteed to have a number of knock-on effects that will affect our culture in very unpleasant ways.

IT was early in 1951 that bulldozers advanced to tear into a piece of ground in the Alexandra Road area of Penzance to prepare the way for what was to become one of the best football stadiums in the west.
Penlee Park as it is seen today is a far cry from its humble beginnings.
Since then Penlee Park has played host to numerous professional teams, and plans are in place to host another Football League club later this year to mark 50 years of football at the ground, hopefully with a new set of floodlights to mark the ground's Jubilee year.

On 19 December 1981, the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, was called out from the village of Mousehole to a vessel in distress, the MV Union Star.
At about the same time, the Union Star was overwhelmed and laid on her side to the west of Tater-du Lighthouse.
Penlee Lifeboat currently has 23 volunteers and Mike Saga-Fenton from the RNLI said that people still queue up to do it.

The Union Star, en route from Holland to Arklow in Ireland with a cargo of fertiliser, was on her maiden voyage.
A salvage tug, the Noord Holland, stood by in case they failed to restart the Union Star's engines and a Sea King helicopter was scrambled from Culdrose on the Lizard peninsular, to airlift the captain's family to safety if needed.
Research may well lead them, as it has me, to the deserted boathouse at Penlee, with its touchingly simple memorial garden, and then to the north aisle in the Parish Church at Paul, where a plaque on a granite boulder, fittingly brought from Lamorna Cove, commemorates the eight lifeboatmen.

IN its distinguished history, no RNLI disaster stands out like the loss of the Penlee lifeboat, when eight men died trying to save the crew of the Union Star six days before Christmas 1981.

 Porthcurno to Penzance
None can have been more unfortunate than the loss of the Penlee lifeboat as well as the ship whose crew she was trying to rescue, the Union Star, on Christmas Day 1981.
A memorial garden has replaced the Penlee lifeboat station and the area is now served by a new station at Newlyn.
The mile and a half of road walking from Penlee Point to Newlyn comes as something of a rude shock after the peace and quiet of the cliffs and coves back beyond Mousehole.
