The Main Line was settled in the 1600's, when William Penn sold land to a group of Welsh Quakers for ten cents an acre.
The Main Line Railroad was constructed during the nineteenth century, and traveled through the area from Philadelphia to Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

 Main Line of Public Works - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Main Line of Public Works was a railroad and canal system built by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, running from Philadelphia west through Harrisburg and across the state to Pittsburgh.
It consisted of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad from Philadelphia to Columbia, the Allegheny Portage Railroad from Hollidaysburg to Johnstown, and canals connecting the two railroads and from Johnstown to Pittsburgh.
The old line from the river west up the plane was abandoned; the Columbia Bridge and line east to Broad and Vine Streets were sold to the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad as part of their main line.

The canal era began in Pennsylvania in 1797 with the construction of the Conewago Canal that was built below York Haven and enabled boats to circumvent the Conewago Falls.
By 1840, the Pennsylvania "Main Line" Canal encompassed 726 miles of waterways, associated railways, and inclined plains.
The Pennsylvania Canal Company was formed by the PRR in 1867, and a fair amount of freight was handled by various canal systems in the state until roughly 1875, when the business began a steady decline.

 The Pennsylvania Railroad
The Pennsylvania took over the Camden and Amboy Railroad in, 1871, and all records of early railroad construction agree that this ancient stretch of track was one of the first to be laid anywhere in the United States.
The first lengths of rail for the pioneer line were received by ship from England early in 1831, and the first piece of track, five-sixths of a mile long, was laid during the summer of that year from Bordentown northwards, in the direction of Hightstown.
It is a terminus on the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The main problem with "flash" locks and single gates was that they used large volumes of water unless the levels on either side of the gate was equal.
In 1824 the Pennsylvania Society sent the engineer William Strickland to Great Britain to study railway construction, and it was subsequently that the astonishing Allegheny Portage Tramroad was built as part of a composite railway and canal link, with no less than ten powered inclined planes.
The ambitious Pennsylvania Main Line (see "Inclined planes") of 1826-34 entered Pittsburgh at its western end by passing over a 348m long wooden-trough aqueduct over the Allegheny River.

This railroad was part of a much larger system, the Pennsylvania Main Line of Public Works, built by the state of Pennsylvania to compete with the Erie Canal in New York.
Construction of the Allegheny Portage Railroad section of the Pennsylvania Main Line system began in 1831, and the railroad opened to traffic in 1834.
In 1857 the Pennsylvania Railroad bought the entire Main Line system from the state and began dismantling the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

Although not in Pennsylvania, this trail is within driving distance, linking the four corners of Ohio in a 1435 mile circuit running from Headland Dunes State Park on Lake Erie, south to Cincinnati and back around the state to the west.
The main Finger Lakes Trail is 552 miles long and connects the Catskill Mountains with the Allegheny Mountains by passing through remote areas of the Southern Tier of New York State.
