North Huntingdon commissioners at their meeting last week voted to make the rear access road into the plaza from Pennsylvania Avenue a two-way street again.
In January, township commissioners made the opening of the road onto Pennsylvania Avenue to two-way traffic as a requirement for a Wal-Mart plaza to be built on nearby Barnes Lake Road.
Steve White of J.J. Gumberg Co., which owns the plaza, said members of his firm have been working with Target representatives for more than a year to get them interested in the former Ames store, which is standing empty.

 Pennsylvania Highways:  Pennsylvania Turnpike
Other Turnpike firsts occurred at Carlisle: the first out-of-state traveler, Bruce Carroll, on a journey back to his home in Ohio, the the first commercial vehicle on an interstate journey bound for Steubenville, Ohio, and the first heavy truck loaded with potatoes (symbolic of Pennsylvania's agricultural heritage) all entered at that toll plaza.
Pennsylvania was one of the first states to establish a highway department.
None of the existing South Pennsylvania tunnels that were going to be used for the Turnpike were "holed-through" in 1885; however, they were excavated from both ends.

Through passenger traffic would be accommodated by a new Pennsylvania Station at 30th and Market Streets; commuter traffic would be handled jointly by the 30th Street Station and a new combination office building and station structure to be built one block northwest of Broad Street Station.
Suburban Station was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad as part of a 1920’s city-wide project to revamp the transportation infrastructure and correct some railroad-created eyesores.
The recovered space along Market Street was developed into Penn Center Plaza in the mid-1950’s with one of the first buildings, Six Penn Center, built by the railroad itself at 17th Street.

The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike — Brief History
When the Pennsylvania Turnpike first opened from Middlesex to Irwin in 1940, the new toll road was truly "America's Tunnel Highway." A trip from one end to the other would take a motorist through seven different tunnels: (from east to west) Blue Mountain, Kittatinny, Tuscarora, Sideling Hill, Ray's Hill, Allegheny, and Laurel Hill.
In 1959, The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) conducted an engineering study assessing possible options to "uncork the bottlenecks" at Laurel Hill and Allegheny Mountain, and additional studies on the other five tunnels soon followed.
To a lesser extent, the Sideling Hill plaza would also act a partial replacement for Path Valley, a service plaza 15 miles to the east that the PTC would soon close.
