Irish penny coin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Irish penny coin was the third smallest denomination of the Irish currency and worth 1/240 of an Irish pound.
At the time of the coins introduction it was described as "most frequently used by the women of the house and by the children", this description today would almost certainly lead to accusations of sexism but in the Irish Free State of 1928 it caused little effect.
The coin was introduced in 1928 and ceased to be legal tender on December 31, 1971.

Penny was likely readily adopted because the previous coinage in Canada (up to 1858) was the British monetary system, where Canada used British pounds and pence as coinage.
In Canada a penny is a coin worth one cent or 1/100th of a dollar.
The current coin has a round, smooth edge, and this has been the case for most of its history; however, from 1982 to 1996, the coin was twelve-sided.

Coins with Runic legends were issued at least until the middle of the 8th century, and some of the memorial stones date probably even from the 9th.
Anonymous gold coins, resembling Frankish trientes in type and standard (21 grains), are also fairly common, though they must have passed out of use very early, as the laws give no hint of their existence.
In the same reign the silver coins underwent a considerable change in type, being made larger and thinner, while from this time onwards they always bore the name of the king (or queen or archbishop) for whom they were issued.

Canadian One Cent coins-Calgary Coin Gallery
The denomination of a cent is equal to the British 1/2 penny, but the government had them struck to the weight standard of 100 coins to the pound rather than the the British standard of 80 coins to the pound of bronze.
Unlike the silver coins of this series, the large cents were struck with medal alignment, except for a very rare variety of the 1859 which had a 180 degree die rotation causing it to have coinage alignment (we have never seen one, but they do exist).
From 1937 to partway through 1942 these coins were struck from an alloy containing 95.5% copper, 3% tin and 1.5% zinc (the same as the earlier small cents) but part way through 1942 the alloy was changed to 98% copper, 0.5% tin and 1.5% zinc.

 Encyclopedia: British coinage
The English penny was derived from a silver coin (the sceat of 20 grains weight)which was in general circulation in Europe during the middle ages.
The weight of this coin was instituted by Charlemagne, and the purity of 92.5% silver (sterling silver) was instituted by Henry II in 1158 with the "Tealby Penny" – a hammered coin.
In 1920, the silver content of all British coins was reduced from 92.5% to 50%, with a portion of the remainder consisting of manganese, which caused the coins to tarnish to a very dark colour after they had been in circulation for a significant period.
