The Penny Post is any one of several postal systems in which normal letters could be sent for one penny.
In the United Kingdom, the London Penny Post was established in 1680 by William Dockwra, who established a local post that used a uniform rate of one old penny for delivery of packets up to one pound in within London.
On 10 January 1840, the Uniform Penny Post was established throughout the UK, and several months later could be prepaid with the postage stamp known as the Penny Black.

The Penny Post routes operated six days a week and it's rates of a penny were lower than those charged by private carriers, with some charging as high as four pence (4d).
In 1830, the letter rates for the Penny Post were 4d for 15 miles, 5d for 20 miles and thence according to a sliding scale to 1s for a limit of 300 miles.

We should note that there is no envelope, only one sheet of paper, folded like an envelope, and sealed with wax on the back (an envelope would have doubled the postage).
Before the Penny Post in 1840, it would have cost William Farmer about 7d to send the same letter to his brother in Devizes, about 45 miles away (see postage rates).

At Holyhead the Post Office kept five or six sailing 'Packets' in readiness to meet the mail coaches, In theory they were to sail daily in both directions.
The increase in mail on the London to Ireland route resulting from the success of the mail coaches, was a prime factor in the construction of the Menai Bridge to span the Menai Straits (which separates the Isle of Anglesey from the mainland.) This bridge was opened in 1826 and replaced the unpredictable ferry service.
Compare this example of a letter posted 23 August 1839 from London to Stroud in Gloucester - the cost was 9d (ninepence) for a distance between 80 and 120 miles.
