Penny Presses and the Law - click here to read about why penny presses are legal.
A penny press is a coin-operated machine that rolls a coin (in our case a genuine penny) through a hand-cranked mill consisting of two specially hardened rollers.
As the round penny is cranked down between the rollers it is squeezed or “squashed” under tremendous pressure into the image selected and emerges in the unique elongated shape of all pressed pennies and proudly now displaying that souvenir image you selected.

Penny presses found that the more they incorporated wild exaggerations and outright suggestive details into their stories, the more likely the American people would be to actually purchase them, Crawford notes (111).
Gradually, the penny press journalists came to be known to the respectable, elite newspapers of the day as "fakers" or as "chasers of ghost crime." The respectable papers frequently stereotyped the penny press reporters as suspicious journalists who had a "knack for inventing crime when there was no crime" (Crawford 46).
The writers of the penny press were also frequently thought of as public vultures who attended populated public arenas to "observe the masses of crowds and wait for the right individual to strike upon" (46).

In this, it was representative of the penny press.
Only the penny press could be a free press, he wrote, "simply because it is subservient to none of its readers-known to none of its readers-and entirely ignorant who are its readers and who are not."" The penny papers were not only formally independent of political parties but were, relatively speaking, indifferent to political events.
Penny papers specifically, not newspapers generally, made use of the telegraph; the peculiar disposition of the penny press to seek timely news, not an irresistible attraction of fast news service in wartime, is important here.

Previous Research A great deal has already been written about the penny press, including biographies of its major players, arguments about its roots, and discussions of its lasting impact.[11] In addition, there is also a small but steadily growing body of material surrounding the historical study of letters to the editor and editorials.
But it should be noted that the two "revolutionary" penny press papers (Herald and Sun) only published a combined total of 37 letters, while the more conservative sixpenny papers (Courier and Enquirer and Post) published far more, with 181 letters published between them.
