The north and south sections of Loop 360 were connected when the Pennybacker Bridge was opened for traffic on December 3, 1980.
On February 19, 1980 the Travis County commissioners voted to designate it the "Capital of Texas Highway." Despite popular outcry, segments of the future designation was changed on July 14, 2004 to a toll road by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO).

The bridge is officially named the Pennybacker bridge in honor of a TxDOT engineer.

A proposed bridge across the Potomac between Fairfax or Loudon and Montgomery counties, called “The Techway”, is being touted by supporters as a cure for for the Beltway blues.
A two million dollar study is currently underway to figure out if the bridge is the best way to get an estimated 100,000 commuters across the state line each day.
There are several possible locations and designs for the bridge (to see a map of possible routes for The Techway, click here), but the Techway would undoubtedly be a parkway-style toll road with limited access.
