The Penobscot Building was Detroit's tallest building for nearly half a century until the Marriott Renaissance Center overtook it in 1977.

City officials in Brewer said they are pleased with the news because of the agency’s plans to restore the turn-of-the-century building and because the investment represents an early success in the city’s waterfront redevelopment plan, which was adopted by the City Council late last year.
Plans for Penobscot Landing, as the waterfront area now is known, call for such attractions as an entertainment district, public market, pedestrian mall, facilities for boaters, an upscale condominium complex, an outdoor amphitheater, and recreational and interpretive trails, among other things.
McDonnell said that the agency plans to replace the building’s roof and furnace, remove some of the walls not original to the building to create a bright, open space and replace missing wood trim with trim consistent with the building’s turn-of-the-century origin.

Completed in 1928, the stately 45-story office building was the tallest building in Michigan for half a century, and thanks to some major renovations in the last few years and ongoing maintenance work performed by the building trades, most of the structure probably looks as good today as it did when it first opened.
The Detroit Area Art Deco Society Award was given to the building last year as a project that has "completed a significant restoration to a 20th century building in the art deco, moderne or streamline style." The Penobscot Building was chosen because of the renovation work performed by the building's owners, Capstone Advisors.
Building trades workers and Pointe Jewelry pitched in during the holiday season to raise $10,010 for "The House" at St. Rita, an inner-city Detroit parish that provides food and a quiet place to study after school for neighborhood young people.
