Penrith is a large town acting as a regional centre for the eastern Lake District, lying just outside the National Park.
The Penrith Museum and Tourist Information Centre are housed in the former Robinson's School, an Elizabethan building which was altered in 1670 and used as a school until the early 1970's.
Penrith railway station is close to the centre of Penrith, and directly opposite the ruins of Penrith Castle.

Penrith Church, dedicated to St Andrew, is a large and handsome building, in the Grecian style, built in the years 1720 and 1722, at the expense of £2253 raised by a parochial rate and voluntary contributions.
Penrith fell under the authority of the ancient diocese of Carlisle and wills prior to 1858 were proved in the consistory court there.

In February, Penrith City Council played host to a delegation of government managers from Jakarta City and neighbouring Bekasi Regency (photo above).  The delegation was taking part in a study tour of federal, state and local government in Australia, as Indonesia undergoes government reforms and decentralises many functions to district and provincial level.
Penrith residents can see many of the gifts from international friends on the ground floor of the Civic Centre, to the right of the foyer, and on the second floor of the civic centre in the foyer area.

Constance Margaret Neale was born on 6 Jan 1885 the daughter of Henry James Fulton Neale and Jane Graham (nee Robbins).  She was baptised at St Stephen's Church of England, Penrith on 8 February 1885.
After leaving school, Constance completed her nursing training and at the outbreak of war, was employed at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
On 3 June Neale reported for duty at No 2 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall England and was transferred to Headquarters on 16 June 1916.   In July Neale was briefly taken on strength at No 3 AGH and on 13 August 1916, returned to England as a passenger aboard the Kanowna.

The nearest lake to Penrith is Ullswater which is reasonably large and surrounded by high peaks and wooded valleys.
