		By 1902 there was such a desperate shortage of bottles in New Zealand that the Government took action in 1903 by putting bottles on the free import list.

		In 1980 the New Zealand Society of Artists in Glass was founded, and in 1981 another international workshop was organised.

		Penrose is an industrial area in the city of Auckland, New Zealand.
		It is located to the southeast of the city centre, at a distance of about nine kilometres, between the suburbs of Oranga and Mount Wellington, and close to the Mangere Inlet, an arm of the Manukau Harbour.
		The area was first settled by Europeans as a military establishment during the Maori Wars in the mid 1860s.

	Auckland Bottle Works, from New Zealand
		So when the Australian Glass Manufacturers Company, major exporters of bottles to New Zealand, built their bottle works in Auckland in 1922, they were careful to seek local favour.
		Since it is part of the Penrose plant's collection of old bottles, it is likely to have been one of the first they made.
		The glass itself is made from pure silica sand from the far north of New Zealand, mixed with limestone from Te Kuiti and soda ash which is imported.
