 Around Pensford
Pensford, which is in the parish of Publow, is an old market town based around a convenient place to cross the River Chew, a waterway that has had many influences, both good and bad, upon the town and the surrounding district.
With a settlement growing around the crossing place, the community grew as the river was harnessed and used to operate a number of woollen cloth mills, from the ready supply of raw material scattered around the nearby hills and vales.
When it was constructed the turnpike cut a swathe through the community, with a new road, and a new bridge, which almost isolated the two halves of the existing town.
