Penstock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Penstocks at the Grand Coulee Dam's third powerhouse.
Penstocks are sluices or gates or intake structures that control water flow, or enclosed pipes that deliver water to hydraulic turbines and sewerage systems.
Penstocks for hydroelectric installations are normally equipped with a gate system and a surge tank.

Inside the Lower Arizona Penstock   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
A Penstock is the 'pipe' that delivers the water to the generator's turbine at a hydro electric plant.
The penstock is located a little over a hundred feet behind the canyon walls.
The real maintenance action required in the penstock and laterals is the removal of any surface rust and re-sealing the metal from direct contact with water.

 PN-95-7 - Elwha Technical Series
A 15-foot-diameter penstock to the south is supplied by two 9.5-foot-diameter penstocks at the upstream end, and branches at a surge tank to two smaller penstocks serving units 3 and 4.
Penstock releases could be controlled by the existing wicket gates, with the turbine runner removed to ensure operating capability under no-load conditions.
Deliver the penstock pipe sections to the existing access bridge on the dam crest (or to an alternate location) for removal by a second mobile crane and subsequent delivery to a flatbed truck on the main access road.

Xcel was also ordered to study the thickness of the pipe’s walls and to investigate the time it took for valves to shut down water flow during the 2001 break.
Taken together, the report claimed, stress tests, examinations of pipe thickness, analysis of 21 past leakages, a study of key valve closure times, an inquiry into “non-project” threats presented by Pathfinder and various other tests all pointed to the same conclusion: the pipeline was in reasonably good health.
Pathfinder Gravel, which says it voluntarily suspended truck traffic across the penstock in 2003 to let Xcel study the situation, remains at legal loggerheads with the power giant – they dispute the location of Xcel’s easement across the property – while calling on FERC to dewater the penstock unless improvements are made.

Steel Penstock Design for Tims Ford Dam   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The design and construction of an embedded steel penstock is discussed.
Shell and stiffeners made of A 516, grade 60 are designed for internal head of 235 ft and an external head of 153 ft. Allowable working stress of 60% of yield strength gave a safety factor of three.
Hydrostatic tests of the penstock in place along with 100% radiographing of all shell welds was required.

CB&I : Project Profile – Gauley River Penstock
The diameter of the penstock ranges from 10.2-17 feet; material thickness ranges from 0.6-4 inches, and its length exceeds 350 feet.
The penstock connects one of the existing 11-foot conduits to the spiral cases of two new 40-megawatt power generation turbines.
We designed and installed two bifurcations in the penstock in order to individually feed water to the powerhouse turbines as well as to the bypass conduit.

 WAPA - CRSP Management Center
The Upper Molina penstock extends from the junction of the Bonham and Cottonwood pipelines, then continues approximately 2.4 miles down the north slope of Grand Mesa, and terminates at the Upper Molina Powerplant.
The penstock consists of welded steel pipe with a capacity of 50 cubic feet per second, ranging in diameter from 36 inches at the junction with the Bonham-Cottonwood collection system to 33 inches at the lower section.
The penstock consists of steel pipe ranging in diameter from 36 inches at its upper end to 30 inches at the lower section.

This is the line of the penstock, and in this view, a cat has made the first cut at the hill.
Once the penstock is completed, the bottom end will be seccured to a thrust block and a section will be fitted to connnect to the main valve before entering the turbine.
The actual rate of flow in the penstock is relatively unimportant, unless the pipe is so long that is adds too much friction to the flowing water.

The drawdown, which will reduce water pressure on the outside of the penstock, is scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 2.
The penstock at Blue Ridge has had structural deficiencies since it was placed in operation by the Tennessee Electric Power Company in 1931.
Because of these deficiencies, a deep drawdown is required about every five years to inspect and document the condition of the penstock.

Hoover Dam, Penstock System, Declared A Historical Welded Structure   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
MIAMI--December 9, 2002-- Nearly 70 years ago, the Hoover Dam was built in Black Canyon on the Colorado River a striking testimony to the perseverance of the human spirit, and the ingenuity of the American laborer.
B&W was awarded a contract in 1932 to manufacture and install the Dam's penstock system that connects the structure's four intake towers to the power plant and outlet valves.
The task was enormous as the penstocks and outlet pipes were fabricated from 45,000 tons of steel and welded into nearly three miles of pipe varying from 8 1/2 to 30 feet in diameter.

WaterView2000.com [WaterView Module: Penstock and Tunnel Optimization]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
In the Penstock and Tunnel Optimization (PTO) module, a proprietary network flow model (SFSIM) interacts iteratively with the WaterView net head optimization module.
The PTO module uses a run-time DLL to provide steady-state head losses, based on proposed discharges, for all significant sources such as transitions, tees, bifurcations, valves, conduit, intake/discharge structures, etc. The optimization module uses the measured headwater and appropriate tailwater-discharge functions to convert these losses into net heads for calculating unit efficiencies.
Also illustrated is the piping network model used in the Penstock and Tunnel Optimization (PTO) module for TVA’s Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Plant (RMPSP).
