  Neo Pentacostalism And Charismania
Pentacostals were NOT too well received by other churches at their advent in American religious history...
Oral Roberts popularized and spread the "pseudo-healing movement" in America, in a big way, using "tent meetings" to appeal to a cross section of the american community that was not "theologically adepth" enough to counter his false claims.
Jim Bakker at the hey day of PTL club, which was the "religious pharisee" version of "disneyland, illustrated the depth of corruption pentacostalism had sunk to, with Jim Bakker even being reported having engaged in "homosexual activities" and a subsequent adulterous affair with "Jessica Hahn".

Speaking in tongues, also known as glossolalia, is seen as evidence that a person has received one of many blessings or spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Most major Pentacostal churches also accept the corollary that those who don't speak in tongues have not received the blessing of the Holy Spirit.
However, critics charge that this doctrine does not mesh well with Paul's criticism of the early Corinthian church for their obsession with speaking in tongues (see 1 Corinthians, chapters 12-14 in the New Testament).

The ‘oneness’ or pentacostal Unitarian movement which began in 1913 and caused a major schism in the Assemblies of God in 1916.
Pentacostals have employed more women as leaders than any other tradition—which only attracted more criticism from mainline denominations.

 Pentacostals pass Methodists in England
David Voas of Manchester University suggested that the Methodist Church, founded in England 300 years ago by Charles Wesley in a split from the Church of England, may end up being reabsorbed by the Anglicans.
Pentacostalism, which was founded in the United States, has spread to South America and Africa.
Voas said that in the mid-19th century about half of the English were regular churchgoers and one-quarter of those were Methodists.

In the early 1900's there was a rise in Pentacostalism in the US from Los Angeles and the critics and dominant Christian sects said this style of religion was "the last gasp of Satan." And they all figured it would die out.

If outsiders knew nothing else about early pentacostals, they knew that saints ought to live their days and especially their nights in a heavenly city glittering with the signs and wonder of the New Testament church.
The point rather is that even commonly sanctioned satisfactions such as dropping a fishing line or watching a parade faded in the glow of the heavenly light.
Consider, for example, the diary of Pentacostal Holiness Church leader George Floyd Taylor.

Alumbradismo and Pentacostalism - The Dancing Lawn - Official Forums of Narnia Fans
I know that modern Pentacostals trace their roots back to the turn of the 20th century, specifically the Azusa Street Revival, but also to "moves of God" that happened before that.
I believe the official start of Azusa Street was in 1906, whereas the first "recorded" case of speaking in tongues in modern history happened in 1901.
Growing up as Pentacostals, we are generally taught that these signs and wonders fell dormant at some point during the early middle ages; and that only with the spiritual re-awakening in the early 20th century did they start to happen again.

Iowa Underground! :: View topic - The origin of Rapture theory / Pentacostalism
Sure it didn't even exist within the lifetime our nations founding fathers, nor was it invented by an American, nor did an American's "visions" serve as the basis for it's tenets.
To me, it seems that the modern evangelical (and to a greater degree, Pentacostalism) evolved from the "Pietist" movements that originated in Lutheran churches in the 1600s.
After nearly a century of constant warfare amongst Lutherans/Calvinists and the RCC in the Holy Roman Empire - a movement started to place less emphasis on doctrine and more on personal relations with God.

The Truth - Missionaries to America
It would not be inaccurate to say that the Word of Faith movement, a heretical movement within Christendom which is supposedly a branch of Pentacostalism but is instead a mixture of the gospel, greed, and Eastern mysticism, is responsible for a lot of bad press.
Yet other images include the Catholic church (which many think is representative of all Christianity) with its recent sex scandals, and the Protestant (specifically Pentacostal) penchant of speaking in tounges, rolling on the floor, making people very uncomfortable and turned off to the Truth of God.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the "god of this world," the devil, would have people think that people who do that are no better than the Heaven's Gate occultists who killed themselves, in order to board a UFO and go to another planet.

The Physical and Psychological Effects of Meditation Introduction, part 1
Here presentations on scientific evidence as well as historical and thematic scholarship attempted to interpret the life-world of radically different epistemological frames of reference from those of the laboratory scientist.
It also meant taking seriously the claims of faith traditions in the West such as Pentacostalism, the Charismatic Catholic movement, and Seventh Day Adventism which the scientific outlook normally rejects.
As well, Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist scholars took up the more difficult task of interpreting the spiritual traditions of non-western cultures as significant sources of healing.
