This was the era in which bands such as Def Leppard, Warrant, and Bon Jovi came to the foregrounds and professed to be "heavy metal", and where thrash/speed and death metal bands ruled the metal scene.
Three bands from England, whom all shared the same label, Peaceville, propelled the Death/Doom genre to the level at which it stands today; Paradise Lost being the first with their release of 'Lost Paradise' in 1990 (which still had a strong death-metal influence).
Bands like The 3rd and the Mortal created a more atmospheric type of doom with albums like Tears Laid in Earth' and were one of the first metal bands to have a fulltime female lead singer.

In the last years of the Eighties some bands started mixing the slowness, sadness and special feeling of Doom Metal with the utter heaviness and brutality of Death Metal, giving birth to what is here called DOOM/DEATH.
These bands can not always to be expected to stay within the speed limits of CLASSIC DOOM and the Death Metal vocal style might turn away fans of the original variant.

 Pentagram - Turn To Stone - review @ Tartareandesire.com
Pentagram is one of the most famous doom metal bands in the Black Sabbath vein.
This compilation disc consists of tracks from the three albums that the band released through Peaceville Records namely "Relentless" (re-release version of their self-titled debut album), "Day Of Reckoning" (re-release) and "Be Forewarned".
I can not tell for certain but I suspect that Pentagram was the first doom metal band on the American continent and perhaps the first in the world if you don't include Sabbath.

The subsequent song, “Human Taste”, is a very heavy doom metal song, significantly different to the opener.
It is a very clever song, as the band clearly demonstrates that has a deep knowledge of genuine doom metal and successfully approaches it with respect, admiration, and honest love.
Therefore, traditional doom fans (and labels) with an interest to the underground (where the heart of our favourite metal genre beats) make sure you check out this new very promising band and contact them at reverend_odd@web.de to get your hands on a copy of it, or visit their website at http://www.torturedspirit.de.ms for more info.

I did it with Picoroco Records because the guy who runs that label was there from the early days (he actually played drums in one of the bands on our very first show) and I knew he would do it the way it had to be done.

From what I have read, the band doesn't really like this album for a variety of reasons, one of which was Columbia Records botching up their management and promotion bof this disc.
I was totally captivated by the mid-to-slow paced metal, the distinct vocal melodies and the haunting guitar solos.
Of course with any doom band, Black Sabbath comparisons are inevidable, however, "Caravan" doesn't really sound like Sabbath to me. I suppose "stoner rock" is what this type of heavy slidge is labeled, but Cathedral just have far to much groove to be labeled as such.

However, on the RETURN TO THE RECTORY disc the band cut their brave Doom Metal to even bigger slices, the songs being approximately 10 minutes long, but basically having the same spicy and juicy elements that their music has always contained since the beginning of their times.

 Reverend Bizarre - Doom Metal
That is the reason why we so strongly fight for true doom metal; we don’t want it to be suffocated under any trend-setters, or to be forgotten as a mere milestone on the way to some other socially and commercially more accepted and celebrated music genres.
Even metal isn't what it used to be, as the importance of technicity and skills in general has constantly increased at the cost of creativity and pure passion for the music itself - just like it was before punk and later on NWOBHM declared war to the elitism of the academic progressive rock.
Both of these bands had their roots more or less in the Sabbathian sound; KLV was strongly influenced by doom metal (although we never considered our music to be doom), while Mesmer followed closely in the vein of dark 70's heavy/progressive rock bands.

The foundation of Pentagram has always been vocalist Bobby Liebling, who rivals Wino Weinrich (Spirit Caravan) for most revered doom metal personality, thanks to his tailor-made-for-doom voice.
One has to wonder how much longer Liebling can keep going (after all, he's been the core of Pentagram for over thirty years, a remarkable achievement in itself), but as of this time there is no sign of them giving up.
