Topic: Pentagram (game engine)

In the News (Sat 18 May 13)

Game Over Online Magazine - Simon the Sorcerer Pinball
The gaming season, in general, seems to be slowing down again as the mad rush of games in the festive season draws to a close.
The basic idea behind a pinball game (for those poor unfortunate souls out there who have missed out on the better years of their childhood down at the local arcade) is to bounce a silver ball around a box of whirling lights and loud sounds, trying to get as many points as possible.
This particular game, however, is not a part of the ongoing series of Simon the Sorcerer games, though it relates to the two originals by using the characters.

Pentagram - Pentagram F.A.Q. (frequently asked questions)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Pentagram is a game engine for running Ultima 8 on modern operating systems.
Source is the code of Pentagram and is only useful for programmers that want to look at it, compile it or, hopefully, want to contribute to the project.
The initial game is also a savegame and to actually start the game we needed to figure the savegame format out.

Linux Links - The Linux Portal: Software/Games/Role_Play
NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine.
Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.
The graphics in the game are based on simple text characters and the game is controlled with a large number of keyboard commands.

 Sacred review for the PC
Role-playing games have gotten so complex that you can spend days just working out the perfect formula for crafting the Imbued Teir'dal Chain Neckguard and never even see a monster.
Add to that a few other glitches, some broken side quests and the occasional missing bit of dialogue with only a text placeholder, and you have a game that clearly needed more time in the cooker.
The game also comes with multiplayer components, from co-op play through the single-player to actual 16 person player vs. player combat.

 Ultima VI Information
This game ended the use of multiple scales; in earlier games a town, castle, or dungeon would be represented as a single symbol on the world map, which then expanded into a full sub-map when entering the structure.
The game kept the basic tile system and screen layout of the three preceding parts, but altered the look into a much more colorful pseudo-isometric view, to take full advantage of the newly-released VGA graphics cards for PCs.
An engine remake project called Nuvie, similar to the goals of xu4, Exult and Pentagram, is in works.

 Game/Map Design
In the Half-Life engine (and most others), the term "polygon" more specifically means "triangle", since the triangle is the simplest polygon to render in a three-dimensional game engine (it always forms a flat surface in three-dimensional space).
In this game, a "puzzle" is defined as a specific challenge set up by the game designer which requires two or more skills and knowledge of the correct solution to complete.
Depending on the game engine you’re working with, you’ll probably have the choice between point lights (also referred to as omni lights), spotlights, and texture lights.

RPGamer Editorials - I Do Not Like D&D
Rest assured, any Role-playing Game must have some fantastic element to be exciting and thus worth playing, but by no means does it have to be magic and monsters.
Like any game genre that's been around for a while, it just got more complicated and better, but that doesn't mean that an RPG need BE complicated or what have you.
See, in most action games (or other genres) you may talk to people till you turn blue in the face, but it's scripted info that you need to get past a part of the game.

Zillions of Games is arguably the best game engine in existence, at least for period games.

 PAGAN: ULTIMA 8 by Origin
The pentagram has certain connotations, and the impact of the pentagram in the story is dependent on those connotations.
It also presents useful information about the game itself to those interested in buying the game, but as criticism it is solely directed at the back of the box.
Even more noticeable are objects which you try to move a short distance to a spot which the game thinks is "unstable", resulting in the object spontaneously across the entire room until the game finds a place the object can come to rest.

While this was certainly an advancement in many respects, it was also received with mixed reviews, and several jumping puzzles in particular caused more than a little frustration amongst players.
What was truly novel about the game was the way it continually put the Avatar into morally dubious situations, in which sometimes the only way through was to commit acts that would be considered as evil by most players.
The best aspect of this is that Pentagram runs very smoothly and without an intense CPU load, unlike when the game is run under DOSBox.

Romero may have gone on to a certain infamy as the head of Ion Storm, with his truly stultifying Daikatana as it's flagship disaster, Romero was one of the original visionaries who shaped FPS history and is as responsible for the present day state of the medium as Messrs.

The game is set during the fifth season of the show and throws you and the gang into twelve levels of ghouls, in which you'll make your way through graveyards, spook-filled churches, and take on such faves as Kakistos and the universe's oldest living bad guy, The First.
In the original game, accessing your weapons, health boosts, and such could be a real pain.
While a midnight trek through a haunted cemetery may be scary, nothing terrifies a game reviewer like the prospect of having to spend quality time with a game based on a popular license.

Plain Games: Video Game Reviews - Doom 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Almost all enemy encounters are scripted in the game and many rooms contain the same types of encounters: go past a certain point then two bad guys spawn in front of you and another appears from a doorway in the wall behind you.
Even with the disappointment from the multiplayer aspect of Doom 3, the game is still as solid as they come and there is not a bug to be found in the single player mode and that is something we don’t see often.
Most games have some sort of multiplayer aspect that is incredibly appealing, but Doom 3 has almost nothing in that category with capping the players to server to only four (fixed in a mod) you can’t have much fun playing this with your friends.
