-A new hypothesis concerning the evolutionary origin of pentameral symmetry in echinoderms is presented.
The BA-A-BA pattern of Lovn's law in echinoids and the 2-1-2 symmetry of the edrioasteroid Stromatocystites appear to be morphogenetically related, and this pattern appears to be locked into development.
Three robust morphological characters emerge from the "rays-as-appendages" model: (1) 2-1-2, BA-A-BA, organization; (2) "locked-in" pentamerism; and (3) a 2-3 pattern of right and left rays.

Bilateral symmetry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other animals which appear to possess radial symmetry have a body plan which is basically bilaterally symmetric.
The echinoderms exhibit pentaradial symmetry or pentamerism but this is a secondary characteristic - echinoderm larvae are bilaterally symmetric, as are echinoderm ancestors.
Some sea urchins (class Echinoidea) have further modified their radial symmetry to become bilaterally symmetric again.

(5) Pentameral symmetry is superimposed on a fundamentally linear arrangement which is comparable to that of most other groups of organisms.
Because the story of echinoderm evolution is generally on of reduction of extraxial skeleton, and increasing dominance of axial skeleton, pentamery is less prominently expressed in the very oldest taxa than in more derived forms.
Pentamerism is actually superimposed on a basically linear arrangement of axial - perforate extraxial - imperforate extraxial skeletons.

The Priapulida, a group of burrowing marine worms, possesses dental armature arranged on its proboscis in pentagonal whorls (Nichols 1967).
This tendency is responsible for the establishment, at the level of coelocanthid fishes, of the morphogenetic premise which led for example, to the five fingers of Homo and for the reduction of the ancestral strobile around five sectors of growth which led to modern pentamerous flowers.
The genetic spiral, described by the developmental sequence of leaf primordial, is often assumed to have special significance for phyllotaxis.

For animals relatively high on the evolutionary scale, it is remarkable that a head has never been developed..
Their weird symmetry is called pentamerism, a form of radial symmetry with the body arranged around the mouth.
This 5 point symmetry is displayed by most of the modern day echinoderms possibly making a stronger skeletal framework, but their larva have bilateral symmetry.(so did their primitive ancestors).

American Zoologist: On the number of rays in starfish
The large number of strictly pentamerous families of starfish support the interpretation that there is "rigid control" of pentamerism.
As noted by Lawrence and Komatsu (1990) the control of ray number is very precise in five-rayed species.
