Pentangle's old albuns are one of my highest recommendations.
Pentangle's first three albums -- The Pentangle (1968), the double LP Sweet Child (1968), and Basket of Light (1969) -- are not only their best efforts, but arguably their only truly essential ones.
And Pentangle were very popular for a time, at least in England, where Basket of Light made number five, and "Light Flight" was a small hit single.

Pentangle (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name Pentangle was chosen to represent the five members of the band, but the pentagram symbol also has a number of mystical associations and is the device on Sir Gawain's shield in the Middle English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight which held a fascination for Renbourn.
Pentangle's self-titled debut LP was released in May 1968.
Basket Of Light, which followed in mid 1969, was their greatest commercial success, thanks to a surprise hit single, Light Flight which became popular due to its use as theme music for a TV drama series "Take Three Girls" for which the band also provided incidental music.

 Pentangle Old History
Formed in 1967, 'The Pentangle' was inspired by 'Bert and John', a collaborative album by folk musicians Bert Jansch (b.
Their respective talents were expertly captured on The Pentangle, where the delicate acoustic interplay between Jansch and Renbourn was brilliantly underscored by Thompson's sympathetic support and McShee's soaring intonation.
However, despite an undoubted dexterity and the introduction of muted electric instruments, subsequent releases were marred by a sense of sterility, and lacked the passion of concurrent releases undertaken by the two guitarists.

One of the most prominent acts in the 1960s British folk-rock scene, Pentangle was essentially a groovier, jazzier counterpart to its peer Fairport Convention.
While the latter band took a more traditional rock approach to U.K. folk, Pentangle was eager to inject that venerable aesthetic with a more eclectic vibe, as revealed on the quintet`s outstanding 1968 self-titled debut.
Although Pentangle would go on to record albums that are arguably better, this disc is a bold and assured first outing.

Bio: Were Pentangle a folk group, a folk-rock group, or something that resists classification?
They could hardly be called a rock & roll act; they didn't use electric instruments often, and were built around two virtuoso guitarists, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, who were already well-established on the folk circuit before the group formed.
McShee's beautiful vocals, though not as emotionally resonant as her close counterpart Sandy Denny, were an under-appreciated component to the band's success with the pop audience.

George Graham reviews Jacqui McShee's Pentangle's "Passe Avant"
The Pentangle was one of the three principal groups that established the English folk-rock sound that still attracts fans to this day.
While the old Pentangle's music was traditional folk with a little jazz influence, the new lineup is very jazzy while still using some traditional songs, including ones that were the mainstays of the old Pentangle, as starting points.
The result will come as quite a shock to long-time fans of the Pentangle -- and I have been one ever since their first album thirty years ago -- but viewed objectively, putting out of one's mind the sound of the classic Pentangle, the result is an interesting and appealing album.

Pentangle was widely perceived as past of the British folk rock movement which arose in the latter half of the 1960s.
Pentangle’s music featured the interplay of two acoustic guitar virtuosos, Bert Jansch and John Renbourne.
Jacqui McShee’s unadorned vocals possessed a crystalline purity which effectively conveyed the emotional depth of traditional folk ballads; the fact that Jansch and Renbourne were also very capable singers made possible the inclusion of additional colors and textures.

Along with Fairport Convention, Pentangle is one of the most important bands of the 1960s British folk revival.
Drawing on a truly diverse array of sources, Pentangle developed a unique version of folk rock that was both traditional and progressive.
The group formed when esteemed solo guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn combined their love of classic American blues and ancient English folk songs with the angelic vocals of Jacqui McShee and the jazz-influenced rhythm section of drummer Terry Cox and bassist Danny Thompson.

With guitarists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, vocalist Jacqui McShee, percussionist Terry Cox and Danny Thompson, the world's most ubiquitous bass player, at its core, Pentangle was an early powerhouse in the English folk-fusion scene.
Beautiful, elegant, with a poppy edge (that may be due to the influence of legendary producer Shey Talmy, who adds a nice melodic sensibility...) At any rate, this includes a couple of their more popular tunes, "Sally Go Round The Roses" and "Light Flight," which was used as the theme for an old BBC-TV show.
This album is okay, considering how late in the game things are, but in general it lacks the subtlety and light touch that made Pentangle's early work so great; the straight pop and jazz influences are more obvious, and more distinct, and the overall feel is less acoustic.

`Pentangle Early Classics' (14 tracks from) and `John Barleycorn' (13 tracks) by the John Renbourn group are two albums of a kind with nearly identical personnel (Bert Jansch is not in the John Renbourn group) recorded between 1967 and 1977 with the Pentangle's material being the earlier.
The group The Pentangle focused on that speciality and came out with several albums in quick succession with lots of great old English folksongs, the kind that Joan Baez started out with, except that The Pentangle really made them sound interesting.
