Azalea - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Azaleas are flowering shrubs making up part of the genus Rhododendron.
Originally azaleas were classed as a different genus of plant, but now they are recognised as two of the eight sub-genera of rhododendrons - subgenus Pentanthera (deciduous) typified by Rhododendron nudiflorum, and subgenus Tsutsusi (evergreen) typified by Rhododendron tsutsusi.
One of the major differences between azaleas and the rest of the rhododendron family is their size.

The resulting phylogenies show subgenera Azaleastrum and Pentanthera to be polyphyletic and group all Rhododendron species (except the two in section Therorhodion) into three large clades.
An interesting, although infrequently noted, feature of Sleumer’s taxonomic key is the proximity of the deciduous section Pentanthera to the evergreen subgenus Hymenanthes.
Sections Sciadorhodion and Viscidula and R. vaseyi (section Rhodora) from the discontinued subgenus Pentanthera are combined with sections Azaleastrum, Tsutsusi and Brachycalyx to form an expanded and revised subgenus Azaleastrum.

In section Pentanthera, the species known as R. molle from China and R. japonicum from Japan are now considered just regional variants of the same species, R. molle.
The first letter denotes subgenus (Pentanthera or Tsutsusi) and the second is the section (Brachycalyx, Pentanthera, Rhodora, Sciadorhodion, or Nipponicum).
For instance, all plants with the designation (PP) belong to subgenus Pentanthera section Pentanthera and are relatively closely related and often cross.

Subgenus Tsutsusi, the so-called evergreen azaleas, and Subgenus Pentanthera, the so called, deciduous azaleas, are taxonomically no more related than the other subgenera in the genus.
With the discovery of so many more species over the ensuing years, it became obvious that the division into Genus Azalea and Genus Rhododendron on the basis of the number of stamens was inconsistent and could not be applied.
Subgenus Pentanthera is familiar to the horticultural industry as deciduous azaleas.

If flowers grow from terminal buds, new leaves and shoots grow from lateral buds and leaves are deciduous, then the rhododendron is an azalea in the Pentanthera subgenus.
If flowers and leaves grow from the same terminal buds, and the flowers have 5 to 10 stamens, then the rhododendron is an azalea in the Tsutsusi subgenus.

Azaleas are in the genus Rhododendron, with evergreen azaleas in the subgenus Tsutsusi and deciduous azaleas in the subgenus Pentanthera.
To tell them apart, first look at a flower—most azaleas have only 5 or 6 stamens, while most rhododendrons have 10 stamens.
When searching the Internet, giving it the word azalea along with the name of the azalea will reduce the number of irrelevant links.
