Pentastomida - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
PENTASTOMIDA, or Linguatulina, vermiform entoparasitic animals, of which the exact zoological position is unknown, although they are usually regarded as highly modified degenerate Arachnida of the order Acari.
The body is sub-cylindrical or somewhat convex above, flatter below, broad and oval in front and narrowed and elongate behind.
In the mature stage Pentastomida live in the respiratory passages of mammalia, principally in the nasal cavities.

PENTASTOMIDA [Pentastomida], tongue worms, small phylum of fewer than 100 species of parasites living in the upper respiratory passages of reptiles, and occasionally of birds and mammals.
They are closely related to arthropods, but zoologists disagree as to their exact placement in that phylum.
When the intermediate host, in turn, is eaten, the larvae migrate to the respiratory passages of the final host, where they take up permanent residence and mature.

Sub-classes Thecostraca Tantulocarida Branchiura Pentastomida Mystacocarida Copepoda Maxillopoda is a class of crustaceans, characterised by a reduction of the abdomen and its appendages.
Orders Cephalobaenida Porocephalida The Pentastomida or Pentastoma are a group of parasitic invertebrates commonly known as tongue worms due to the resemblance of some species to a vertebrate tongue.
Superorders Acrothoracica Thoracica Rhizocephala A barnacle is a type of arthropod belonging to infraclass Cirripedia in the subphylum Crustacea and is hence distantly related to crabs and lobsters.

A case tongueworms (Pentastomida): a peculiar problem in context of the modem phylogenetics A.
A direct introduction of Pentastomida in the system of Crustacea implies an unjustified inflation of the tax- onomic diagnosis of the latter group; hence it is unacceptable.
1) Pentastomida and Branchiura are true sister groups as justified by coincidence in spermatozoan ultrastructure and sequence of ribosomal RNA.

 The Tongue Worms (Phylum Pentastoma)
The Pentastoma, or Pentastomida are a smallish phylum with just over 100 species know to science.
All known species are parasites of the respiratory tracts of vertebrates in the adult form.
It was the observation of this arrangement of limb-like protuberances that caused early zoologists to name the animals Pentastomida (see above).

 Krebstiere - Wikipedia

As I taught my course using this book as the primary reference, I realized that Pechenik is more of an taxonomic lumper than I am.
If you are a lumper you will enjoy this book's treatment of various groups (e.g., pentastomida, asteroids and ophiuroids, etc.).
If you tend to be a bit more of a splitter, then you will find areas where you are not in line with the text's information.
